Mechanisto and Lighting

I need to know how to make engine lighting. I just want to figure out how to do it. Or make an object that looks a lot like an engine thrusting. Also how can I make it so that an object is giving off light (i.e. sun) but you can still see the object that is creating it. Yes its confusing. If you use another program and can relate then please tell.

ok... here's the deal. you need to make an object. set it's shadow properties so that it does NOT cast shadows. in the shader for the object, make the ambient lighting for it very high... (90-100%). Now create a light source in the CENTER of the flame or whatever. to get the desired effect you may want to put it more to the rear of it so that it casts light on things on the outside of the engine as well...... try this and email me if it doesnt work...... (thats how i did the flames in (url="http://"http://homepage.mac.com/cdwise86/ev/splash.jpg")this(/url)( image...)

can do it."

I just make a shader, make the base color the color I want it, set the alpha to 90, then make a finish, set the alpha to 90, turn on vary density and no shading and make the edge .5 .
Apply that to a sphere. make the z .1 and the x and y about .1 or .15 smaller then the engine(assuming its a torus).

Well none of those worked and I couldn't figure out how to make my object have an ambient light on yours CrazyChipmunk. Nick on the x,y,z were you refering to the scale of the object? And how does making the alpha higher make the object glow or whatever?

Yes, the x,y,z is the scale. 100 Alpha is solid, and 0 alpha is completely transparant. Alpha is transparancy. I'll post a pic of what it looks like If I can dig 1 up from my web page.
