EV emulator/editor

I was just thinking about the EVO Map Editor, and what a nice piece of software it is. This got me thinking about the most annoying part of making a plug-in: the necessity to launch EV/O, try the plug, quit, make changes, launch EV/O, etc.

Would it be feasible to make a virtual EVironment? What I mean is, you can see how a particular part of your plugin looks/behaves without having to lauch EV/O. I'm not really sure how such a thing would work, but I suppose it would need the basic EV/O data files, and could load and unload your plugin resources to/from memory. It wouldn't be a game, as it would only simulate what you specify. Example, you tell it to show you a syst. That includes dudes, spobs, flets, etc. Maybe you want to see how two ships do against one another in a battle? What I'm saying is that there wouldn't be a "player" present. It would be more of a EV simulator that would give the plug maker a fairly good idea of how things work, while he's developing them.

Alt, if EV/O could be made to load and unload resources, that would work just as well.

Just a thought.

testing sprites and weapons is easy... i could write it .
but doing the same with missions and etc would be hard...

You should write it, then. Even a tool that lets you test out weapons and ship sprites would be helpful.

<snippy voice>I have tried it, Punctuation-boy.</snippy voice>.

It doesn't do what I propose.

1. Learn how to use punctuation
2. EVEdit sucks. It corrupts plugins, is shareware with an annoying delay, and there are freeware tools to accomplish the same thing.

I think this is a good idea, but it will be hard to make it load in less time than EV. Good luck to anyone who attempts it.

It doesn't have to load faster - it just has to have the capability to reload plugins without having to quit and restart the program every time. If that were the only difference between it and EV/O, I'd find this program indispensible.

Ideally EVN would have the ability to load and unload resources (maybe a EVN Gold that costs more?), but that ain't gonna happen.

Dr. Ralph's fearsome sprite editors for EV3 do exactly that. It's proving to be a great help while developing the game!

Wow, I feel so left out here halfway around the world from Australia. Well, on the bright side, I'm closer to Rochester.
I cant wait till EVN, but in the mean time please make this utility. I would help, but I don't have nearly enough knowlege to do it.

By the way, if anyone can give an endorsement for R&R; Software and their editors (which are technically still under development), it would be myself and a few other members of ATMOS. Their editors rule. It has gotten to the stage now that I feel almost revolted when I have to go back to the old resedit interface whenever a new feature is added to EVN and the editors are therefore out of date until Dr Ralph and Rodger update them.

The length of time for the development of Nova had been greatly decreased by their tools. I heartily recommend that those of you who are interested in developing for the EVN engine that you use their editors (of course, only once everything has been released and you can get your hands on it...).

Well first, i do use punctuation.

Second, Who really care if anybody uses a shareware or not? Come on after the 30 day trail runs out just reinstall it again and continue as normal.

------------------

It's dishonest(possibly illegal) to use it after 30 days without paying for it or with the copyright holder's permission. We didn't want to pay for a program as bad(to put it lightly) as EV-Edit. I could never get it to work and the ones who could would rather use ResEdit than pay for something worse.

In other words, it's okay to steal from people?

This is a yes or no question, by the way.
