What's the data fork, then?

...And how do I hack my way into it?

The Mac OS divides most files into a resource fork and data fork, making it unnecessary to store extra data (ie :pics) separately. EV & EVO store their scenario data in resources. ResEdit, free from apple.com, can get you in. Also Resorcerer (sp?) can, but thats not free.

As far as I know, Resedit won't let you work with the data fork. No way, Hosé. I know of a hacked Resedit (called ResEdit 2.1.4, a joke becuase the latest version from Apple is 2.1.3) that will let you edit the data fork, but I can't find it anymore. Resourcerer will let you edit the data fork.

In the context of the EV/EVO/EVN (as far as I can tell), there is no data fork. It's not used in the game, mostly won't be visible to people who download your Plug-in, and has no special powers besides adding a few bytes to your plug. The most imaginative use of the data fork I've seen is that if you edited a plug-in with EV-Edit, it'd add ".EV-Edit" to your data fork (then it'd eat eat your plug-in, and put "Yummy!" in your data fork :p).

BUT you can edit data forks in MS Word! Open Word, go to File--> Open, then switch from readable files to "All Files", and you can open your plug-in. Type to your little heart's content, then save your file as Text Only. It will now appear as an MS Word file, but not to worry, just switch its Creator and Type codes in ResEdit. I still recommend you make a copy of your plugin before trying this little stunt, becuase Word has been known to put weird things in files, which may seriously F*** up your plugin. I am not responsible if you do try this stunt, don't make a copy, and Word does in fact F*** up your plugin. All rights reserved.

Well, this hasnt really been said properly:

The Data Fork of the file is for storing text etc, it's where text apps save the text and where PPC application code is stored. The data fork has no set structure.
The Resource Fork is for storing extra things, like settings in a document, or application resources, like pictures, windows, menus. It has a set structure.

To edit the Resource Fork you need ResEdit or Resourcer

To edit the Data Fork, do NOT EVER use a formatted text app like Word, use BBedit. EV/O do not use the data fork AFAIK.

Simpletext can edit data forks under 32k. just change file/creator to "TEXT","ttxt" and open it. type, and save. then change it back to plug (dont know the codes off the top of my head, sorry)
I suggest using CMTools for this changing and opening with apps. its much faster.
