If you don't want a direct answer, here are two hints.

Try "run."
If you can't get out and you have a registered game, e-mail me and I'll email you a simple plug-in that will teleport you back to Fantrima(or wherever you want to go.. just tell me where you want to be teleported too, heh).
Granted, this is cheating, but it is up to you.
I got out! Took a while, but I killed me some magicians once I got topside. How do you run? I can't seem to find that command anywhere.

There is no run button if that's what you're looking for, however, if you hold the arrow key(s) down and try to evade opponents by side-stepping and aiming for the nearest exit, you will out-distance almost any of the creatures you meet. If you have the awareness skill, you can plan a route through hostile territory with the least chance of encounters. The problems occur when you have to pass through a group. I think the game senses when you are weak and marshalls the forces against you. Conversely, when you are strong, many creatures will run away from you in battle.
Lesson to be learned: buy more healing potions than you think you'll need, and if the supply gets low, beat a retreat to the nearest merchant. (Posted by one who has been killed too many times in the process of learning this game.) When you have enough gold pieces, buy the boots of lightning from Kalixa at Witch Finger - the extra speed comes in handy at times like the one you've just been through.
P.S.: Minotaurs, Spiders (except the web-throwing kind). Azaraths (blue dogs), Ookwasps, Boulders, Rock Imps, Wyrms, and Dark Spirits are the fastest of the ones you will meet, the rest are pretty slow and easier to avoid (or chase).

Note that you must have first completed a quest to retrieve a ring for the Druid Emelius. If this does not sound familiar, or you have not done this yet, then you will be unable to proceed to High Garendall to locate the symbol that you need. Again, this is explained in the Compendium. Go check it out.
