What do you most like in a plug-in?

The topic name states it all: What do you most like in a plug-in? The plot? Graphics? Missions? Overral size? Or other stuff? I personally like the plot, missions, and graphics of a plug-in. As an educated guess, I think most people like either the overral plot or the missions. I was wondering this mainly because I was just curious. Also partly because I'm working on a rather large plug-in for EVO 1.0.2, and I was wondering what exactly to add. More missions? Better graphics?

The plot is all important. It is what makes or breaks a plug. The other factors are very important as well, but not so much. The plot is the base of every plug. Also, good missions are needed as well to give the user a method of interacting with the plot.

Is the answer to this question 'no'?

to expand on Arada Pilot's remarks, a good plot should have all sorts of endings, with plenty of twists and turns. of course, stunning graphics don't hurt either. (for more tips, martin turner started two topics, 110 Comandments of Plug Making and 99 Best Things you put in a plug. i think those are about the right titles, they came out about a month ago, and had all sorts of good ideas in them.)

I'm also working on a large plug, but for EV. You should spend the time to put both in, after all, good things come to those who wait. The overall plot is very important, but the missions even more so because without them, the player wouldn't interact nearly at all. The interaction is what is important.

Make that two votes for originality. Of course, originality is also a fair chunk of making a good storyline...

Metzen made STEVO, Star Treck make up for EVO with lots of nice graphics and NO MISSIONS. So, guess what, he doesn't really like people talking about the importance of the missions in the plug-ins. By the way I share your opinion on the missions. Good plot and nice missions strings decide it all.

?? Do you guys not understand what "hypocrite" means? I mean come on. You've probably heard it enough. But incase you haven't allow me to enlighten you...

hypocrite n : a person who professes beliefs and opinions that they do not hold

Like saying you don't believe in god but pray to him anyways. Get it?

Oh my sarcastic frien, where did I get this idea about this missions thing? When the STEVO was in the development, I asked you about the missions, I got kind of rude answer, something like "Why don't you go make them yourself". If you have problems making missions why don't you just say it. And agai as you said yourself STEVO was in the developement since 1996, quite enough time not only for mastering your 3D skills, don't you think.

As if I was only making 3D Star Trek ships in that time. Alas, I've had numerous other projects that I've worked on since I was 12, including STEV. I'm sorry I said those things in that email so long ago, but you must understand that it was a LONG time ago. How would you feel being so young and recieving, boy it must have been around 11-12 messages a day about missions? You get a little annoyed and angry.

Hmm, it appears that I'm not the only one this has happened to, but my example is much more recently:
EVN and the incessant suggestions. How did they handle it? They had some outbursts as well, and contained there anger, but unlike them I didn't apologize, so I do so now. I'm sorryfor my previous comments and the rudeness that was contained there in.

I have problems making missions... Hmmm, it seems that I have nearly ALWAYS asked for mission developers (until most recently) because of my lack of skills. Most of the time these were dedicated people but the constant state of flux that the plugin was in made it impossible for any missions to last for any period of time. The stellars have been written and rewritten countless times. The same can be said for the ships, dudes, flets, and nearly every attribute.

And the kicker:
After a mission developer committed themselves to the task what did I still get?
Message after message after message about whether missions would be in the final release. The best mission developer I've had to date has been 21st Century Digital Boy but unfortunately, some complications arose and he can no longer program missions for me. So we are finishing the plugin without missions and letting like we've always planned: For 3rd parties to make their own.

Unfotunately, I've been extremely busy. You seem to imply that 3D has been the only thing I've been working since I started STEV. Well, yes and no are the answers your looking for. I started dabbling in 3D when I was 11 working on a Fraternity house for some NAIT (read: post secondary graduate) Alumni through my father. he drew up the blue prints and I made them into 3D. I started 3D on the architectual side and right now am running a small business doing that for other architects, for a moderate fee of course. 😉 This business, school, my real job and my g/f have dominated my life and I work on STEV as much as possible but it is usually just a couple of hours a week if I'm lucky. Christmas holidays I managed about 6 hours/ week, quite high IMO. What have I been doing? A hell of a lot of debugging and adding features. Troy has been doing much of the same as I have and he is the main graphics man.

The one thing I don't like about your previous statement is also that you can talk to anyone in 3D and there is no "top" level that you achieve which you imply. You strive and work and work but you can never "master" 3D. There is simply too much. It is what's called a "life-long" learning process. Just because I've been working on 3D for 5 years doesn't mean I'm anywhere close to really digging deep in the belly of the beast. Damn, eh? Maybe I'll get it next year... 😉

One more question for you Slav:

How did Hypocrite Alert (saying that I'm a hypocrite because I like plugins with originality though I'm the maker of a non-original plugin) turn into a pot shot at me? I think I deserve an apology as well.

Well, forget all that I wrote above. I guess I made not really fair statement. We all have different opinions (or thoughts about other members here), but it was childish to put them into words in above manner.

Metzen, have you tried using mission control. People say its buggy, but I've never had any problems with it that I didn't cause myself. It makes mission editing much easier, though still not foolproof by any meens. And it's free!

I've looked at it, but to really no avail. Making missions from scratch is pretty damn interesting. And with ResEdit I feel in more control, editors leave bad memories (EV-Edit... ugh)

Mission control has no bugs as far as I know. I use it a lot and it always works. Just make sure you have the latest version, available on R&R;'s page (URL, anyone?).

Is the answer to this question 'no'?

I'm in for originality. I also like to see new ships, and if it's not a TC, new ships that fit well with the current story of EV/EVO

I LOVE MISSION CONTROL! Without it, my big plug would have Zero new missions. I find it extremely useful and completely not buggy. It's easy to use, nice layout, and it works. EV-Edit is better for systems, planets, ships, weapons, and all that other junk. For missions? Ugh.
