Res-Edit or EV-Edit?

Which is better? Easier? Less buggy? I need to choose between the two.

P.S.: If something is "too large to be opened with simpletext" how do I open it? Thanks.

Better: ResEdit
Easier: EV-Edit
Less buggy: ResEdit

Oh, and you open files that large with something like BBEdit or TexEdit (forgot the urls..) just don't use simpletext. it sucks.

The best editors are ShipWrite, Mission Control, EVO Developer's Map, EVO Formula Calc, and ResEdit. All of these can be found on the Add-Ons page (I think. Most of them are, anyway).

Don't use EV-Edit unless you're fond of have your work erased at random intervals. Stick with Res-Edit and other stuff like Mission Control, EV/O Developers Map, and Shipwrite.

Shipwrite, EVO Dev Map, and Mission Control are awesome. If you can stand resedit then thats good too.

Can you use developer's map, mission control and Shipwrite on the same plug?

I'm pretty sure you can -- just not at the same time.

Use EV-Edit to flesh out your plugin in the beginning — you can create a lot of stuff very quickly. Just remember to keep backups (what do you mean you don't usually keep backups?).

Move on to the other tools when you come to the detailed tweaking.

Finally, after using Plug Checker, get the fine points with ResEdit.

At least, that's how I've always worked.

And, let's remember that for all it's faults, Ben Chess put a lot of time and energy into EV Edit. There would have been no Frozen Heart without EV Edit, and I suspect that's also true for a lot of other plugins.

I agree with Martin. I've used EVEdit in a similar way. I wrote ShipWrite and Mission Control (and the outf Resedit plugin)
to complement EVEdit. I didn't try to write a whole new EVEdit - there is little point in reinventing the wheel.
I prefer a strategy liek Martin's that uses an array of tools that each have different strenghths - and back up a lot!

BTW when a resource file becomes well used (ie hundreds of additions and deletions) the resource map can get pretty
scrambled - increasing the likelihood of resource problems. I like to use DeRez to convert the file to TEXT form and then rebuild a brand new fresh file with Rez.

Cheers

Nopoe, sorry pal. Not true.

If you go to the addons page, it will have an old version of EV-Edit. It is buggy, the missions never work, and plugs get erased with no warning at random times. I know, it's happened to me. However, I now use EV-Edit 3.3.

The missions work, and they're even easier to make. It's compatible with the 1.0.2 engine. The only time it has ever crashed was when I opened Mission Control at the same time (very stupidly) and even then no software was lost except the outfit I was making.

Only known faults with EV-Edit 3.3:

--The text writer is sometimes a bit buggy, but if you close the text window you are doing and re-open it the problem will go.

--Unlike MC, it doesn't have the 'don't offer mission if (Warship, Freighter ect)'. I haven't been to the EV-Edit site for a while, maybe there's a fix to thisI don't know about.

As Martin Turner says, use a combination of things. I like using all plug-in makers at best, and now with all the new ones Ralph is making it's even better!

Remember; whatever happened with EV-Edit in the past has been fixed in the earlier versions.

Rez and DeRez are MPW tools, although I believe standalone application versions were made. Rez is also part of
CodeWarrior. Rez/DeRez has a resource macro language as well - and you can define resource formats and
use include files when decompiling so that the text is pretty readable. There are standard include files that define Apple system resources. Undefined resources are dumped by DeRez as ASCII Hex + some formatting- and Rez will rebuild them just fine.

Some developers feel safer with their resources as text source code, and argue that they can be checked more easily with good text editors, but I'm usually happy to keep them as compiled resource files.

You might also achieve a similar refreshing effect to Rez/DeRez by creating a new empty resource file with Resedit and copying the resources over to the new file via the clipboard. This should generate a fresh resource map structure in the new file. If you just duplicate a resouce file with the finder, it gets copied unmodified.

So, since I use MPW tools I just run Rez/DeRez because it is easier, but ResEdit could be used too.

Like a lot of people have said, I use ResEdit, complemented by Mission Control, Shipwrite (both available at (url="http://"http://www.sutherland-studios.com.au/family/evo_software.html")www.sutherland-studios.com.au/family/evo_software.html(/url) ), EVO Developer's Map (available at (url="http://"http://members01.chello.se/warlordpontus/ev/evomap.html")http://members01.che.../ev/evomap.html(/url) ), and EVO Formula Calc (available at (url="http://"http://members01.chello.se/warlordpontus/ev/evocalc.html")http://members01.che...ev/evocalc.html(/url) ), complemented by good old ResEdit coding (available (url="http://"http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/62c10253abd2be98862566bb005fbe67/6b1e991512582243862566b2005f263c?OpenDocument")here(/url)). Shďps, spöbs, s˙sts, mďsns, most dëscs, and öutfs (using OutfEditor, from the EVO add-ons page) are covered by these utilities; other resources aren't that difficult with ResEdit and the Override Bible.

I was going to make ' Weapon Smith', but I'm holding off until EVN isout
and I'll put my efforts into making new application level EV resource editors (MC II, SW II and WeaponSmith) then, In the meantime I've made an experimental oütf editor that is actually a plugin for ResEdit. It is at (url="http://"http://www.mso.anu.edu.au/~ralph/rodger/outfeditor.hqx")http://www.mso.anu.e.../outfeditor.hqx(/url)
If this type of small resource editor is popular, I'll make more.

No! Release it now!

I may as well post what programmes I use:
Coding: Resorcerer, EVO Dev Map, Shipwrite, Formula Calc, Mission Control

I agree Ralph, release it now!!!
Mission control is so damn good i'm getting addicted to your work 😛

what's EV-Edit's home page? I might try the new thing, but it'll have to be really good for me to switch... i hate the guy for daring to ask money for it and on top of that the program was just bad news (well early versions anyway) 🙂

sarcas

ps. there seems to be a whole bunch of individual tools to do just about everything save govs, dudes and fleets. Have you guys ever though of joining your source code into one big package?
