i noted on the "110 commandments" string that Bomb mentioned that failbitset almost never works. i remembered that in evo, there is one mission you must fail to proceed with the azdgari (although it becomes almost impossible to fail it in 1.0.2), i think there was a mission you are supposed to fail in frozen heart, and i'm pretty sure babylon 5 allows you to fail the babylon squared mission.
so i got curious: how many people have made a serious effort to develop alternate plot lines through failing or aborting missions? any great successes? any insights as to problems?

The fail mission in Frozen Heart does not use fail bit set.
I can't quite remember why not off hand, but I think that it has something to do with not being able to get it to work. On the other hand, it may just be because the feature didn't exist when I wrote that plot line.
BTW, that particular plot line would work much more easily with the new 'refuse bit set'.

I said that mainly due to experiences I had with both F-25 and later, Reign II, where the failbitset, ironically, failed. Originally, there was supposed to be a Querin mission that was extremely hard, so difficult in fact that the vast majority of players wouldn't be able to complete. So I made the failbitset the same as the compbitset, yielding the same result, pass or fail. Only I got so many complaints about how it didn't work and that the mission was too hard, I had to take it out.
Secondly, in Reign II, I had a similar incident where the failbitset didn't even work in beta testing, so yet again I removed it. It's rather unfortunate because failing that mission would have lead to a rather lengthy UE string, but it never happened. Suffice to say, maybe the failbitset works with EVO 1.0.2, but I can't say because I am yet to try it. Give it a go, if it works, let me know, but otherwise I'd advise that you may want to avoid it for now.
