Well, I finally couldn't take having to rely on online shipyards and tried making one. After several days of experimenation, I finally made something I liked. Not very complex, basicly a cone with wings and a cockpit.
Anyway, I figured out how to make the shipyard/icon and the sprites, but I have problems with the comm. I got the ship to face forward, but when I renedered it it was all ugly. It was dark yellow all over with no sign of any of the other shaders.
What am I doing wrong? Do I need to give you guys more info? I'm using Mechanisto, BTW.
Please help he achieve graphical freedom!

I don't know what was different about the com pic, but when Mechanisto runs out of memory the first thing it does is dump the texture maps, leaving that yellow base color. I assume you're using texture maps--if so, how big are they? If this is in fact the problem, all you have to do to fix it is increase the memory. Unless you changed it already, it's only at 4000K; I have mine at 24000.

I just rendered the ship top-down facing down and put it through make-spin.
Anyway, the color is darker then the standard yellow that Mechanisto does. I'll try the memory thing.

Um? Shouldn't it be top down facing UP?! Works a lot better that way.
