I was thinking about how we didn't get an answer regarding the release of the 3D models from EV. So I talked to Andrew about it and he basically said that Ambrosia released the EVO models, and wouldn't be opposed to releasing the EV models, if Matt is agreeable.
So everyone who wants the models released, post here(including your reason for wanting them). Hopefully Matt will see this and decide that it would be a good thing to do.
My reason is that I would like to have them to use in my EV(now EV3) plugin: 1. To make ships that look as much like the original ships as possible. 2. So I can modify certain ships like the the way the argosy-->rebel destroyer was done. 3. To re-render for the angled style of the EV3 ships.

nah. i don't really care about the EV models.... yet. he's probably to preoccupied with EV3

d00d, the ships arn't that complex. Just recreate 'em yourself, yeesh.

Wouldn't probably have any use for them. And as it said above just make them, if you wonna have upgraded ships it's alwaus easier to use your own model to do that(at least for me).

Plenty of reasonable points here... I guess.
But my answer would be "yeah, go for it!" - if only because I don't see why not. I may or may not have a use for them at some point, and hell, they released EVO's.
Equality guys! Heh.
And hey, what if Durandal doesn't wanna re-do every single ship? He may be lazy to the core, like the rest of us.

A Mechanisto Kestrel Model is included with The Mechanisto Helper thing on the EV Add-ons page.
HellHunter, for some of us, this stuff is really complex. We just wanna see how they do it.

Yes, I think they should.
If you want a reason, I'd have to say that it is IMPOSSIBLE for me to recreate a model from scratch. Trying to get the textures/lighting right would be even worse. At least, with the models and textures/lighting, I could update all of them to have the same amount of detail (battle scarring, crumpling, whatever) that I always notice is missing in some of the sprites. That, and the point of view can easily be changed to get the best angles for radar, shipyard, etc., pictures. Also, the colors shown in third party renderings of pictures missing from the original data files always have bad colors, models, or worksmanship because the source files weren't available. Another thing: the quake engine uses a model format instead of sprites, and if someone were to try and make a QuEV, it would look better with these models.
I'd like to be able to download them just to see how comple they are etc. Plus I might alter them.

I'm behind Durandal all the way!!!! accepts some bills from Durandal

Many were increasingly of the opinion that they had all made a big mistake in coming down from the trees in the first place. And some said that the trees had been a bad move and that no one should ever have left the oceans. - Douglass Adams
And what exactly would you be doing behind Durandal?

I have Mechanisto models (re-created, of course) for all the original EV ships (except the shuttle, liner, and clipper). I'm told they're passable.

Could you send them to me? Or better still, convert them to 3DMF's or Strata or Infini-D files and then send them to me?

Mechanisto doesn't convert files, and I don't have anything that'll convert Mechanisto files. If you find one, let me know. If you still want them in Mechanisto format, email me.

For me to email you I'd have to know your email address, but I don't have it so you'll have to contact me.
Re-creating the origional EV ships wouldn't be too hard for people like myself and Weepul, but I can certainly see how much of a challenge it would be for a lot of people (especially considering my first attempts at making an EV ship. I'll have to post that some time). However, I can't really many reasons for releasing the origional models besides the following:
- To look at the way they're constructed and learn to make your own ships that way or in that style, modify or re-render them, etc. - To arrange them in a planet landing pict of some sort, for your own semi-custom EV look - Download and delete the files in a ritual sacrifice, involving twinkies and/or other flame-retardant hostess products (I won't go into that now)
Most of those have already been mentioned, I know. But I also can see how trying to emulate the style of those models or attempting to duplicate them on your own, no 3D file to assist you, can be quite a learning experience in 3D arts. Every time I try and do that, whether or not I succeed, my skill increases by leaps and bounds. After a couple of ships, it becomse old hat, and then you can start being much more creative. Not to say that you can't be creative within the confines of Matt's Infini-D skill of years back...
In fact, lots of people have already done this, as I recall. You might try contacting the 3D artists of 3rd-party origional-style ships, too, in case Ambrosia doesn't want these files released.
