We are going to run a ship design competition for EV/O ship designers.
All you nead to do is submit three ship graphics, a QuickTime sprite animation (36 frames, maximum 96x96 pixels), and a standard Ship Yard (100x100) graphic, these two will show how well the designer works within the contraints of EV/O. Then there is one free-form 300x300 graphic with any view/setting the designer wants, to show off imagination. Finally we want a one paragraph ship description by the designer.
We will put the entries up on a website and everyone can vote for their favorites. There will be two weeks to submit entries (1 per designer) and then when the exhibition is online we would let voting run for 3 weeks. At the end the winners can go into a hall of fame somewhere (either on our site or maybe on the Ambrosia site??)
Voting will be logged by a cgi script, and we'll post the running resutls each day, (anyone can have a copy of the log file it they want). I think we'll just let people for for as many designs as they like...
Pack a movie and two jpegs into a stuffit file and mail it to evdesign@sutherland-studios.com.au. We'll start putting them up on line as we get them and start the voting once they are all in.
You only have 2 weeks to submit your designs so start your computer!

I reckon either Kwanza or Meowx will winn it. I'll be entering, as soon as I et on a decent computer instead of this crappy pC I'm using now.

Kind of makes me wish I knew how. Oh well. I'll just use then ships from the game. They don't bore me one bit.

A few comments: EVO CAN handle spins greater than 96x96 and shipyards over 100x100. Oh well. I'm not sure what you mean by "submit three ship graphics"....oh wait, I just got it.
If I had already made a ship but never shown it off, is it admissable? Can I have multiple submissions? Please? I should think 2 or 3 would show off ability more than just a single ship.
I reckon either Kwanza or Meowx will winn it.
Don't be so sure. (evil laughter heard echoing in the distance, dark, oppressive shadow being cast over other competitors) I'm not just gonna say no way to this....and if either AJ or onyx (formerly fatalin.tycho enter) I'm gonna have a serious run for my money...

Yeah, when I was testing Cold Blood, I was astounded by some of the graphics he had done.
Oh, and Rodger didn't say that 96 x 96 pixels was EV's maximum, just the highest sprite size he want's for the competition, no reason to laugh at him....

Sure it is! I mean, come on. Why limit something like that in a competition?? -david-

I don't think I can beat -david- with Mechanisto...but thanks for the support...=D Personally...I'll enter just to see where I stand...I doubt I could touch Weepul or -david-...and if Onyx (fatalin.tycho) was here, he'd be MAJOR competition...Deadboy might be trouble also...hmm...hehe...

We don't want the pages to be overflowed with big movies. Fitting a cool ship into only 96 pixels is a challenge - anyone can make a big ship, but it is hard to make a good small ship! It will also fit nicely next to the 100x100 yard picture. Besides, you can go crazy with the 300x300 shot.

Ah, yes. I see. Makes sense. Don't know if I'll be entering though, I'm quite busy... heh, I'm sure that would make a few people happy... -david-

Ah, not really. What's the point of entering if there's no worthy opponents? (I'm not saying there won't be, but less in this case is not more)
Actually, I'd find it interesting to be vs.* you...
*I assume this contest is in friendly spirit and is also for the common good...thus is the spirit of the "graphics revolution".
In the words of that Paladin hero guy in Warcraft II, "I challenge you, heathen!" Seriously, I'd like the challenge (sorta, I'm probably just going to use some things I've already made) and any sort of thing like this is a good opportunity for learning, both self and from others, which would then lead to higher-quality graphics for the public in plugins.
Roger, I've got 2 questions: 1. Can you encourage voters to post comments, opinions, suggestions, etc? Reasons why they voted the way they did and not for others? Constructive criticism, you know? 2. Darnit, I've even emailed you: can you enter more than 1 ship??

OK, people can enter up to 2 designs. If we get so many entries that the web space required gets too big we might have to cut back to one, so rank your entries. We'll put up a competition page over the weekend with the all the final details...
The comments/constructive criticism is a very good idea, that will be a really worthwhile thing for all the designers. We'll probably moderate the comments tho' if that is OK?

You dont have to all that just for a competition , you can use an old ship.

Hmm...I think I'll try and enter, even if I haven't mastered Lightwave yet, I can still do a Kid Pix ship! Only joking, I'll probably knock one up in Infini-d.
