I was told I could find the helpful herbalist in the woods, but when I found the spot according to the map, there was nothing at all on the ground. My hero covered the entire ground several times, and no herbalist. Is he invisible? Do I need some other quest to be completed before Gewin shows up? Any clues? :frown:

Do you have Trinity installed correctly and have it checked to load at start-up? Gewin is an NPC that Trinity adds, and is not in the regular version.
If the above is true, are you sure you are looking in the correct spot? Ie, when you hit the tab key(to load the overhead map) do you see the banner stating Gewin the Herbalist is there? And if so on that one, can you see his store front? If you see the banner and you see the store front but do not see Gewin anywhere, then I'd say we have a problem...

Well, yes, that is what I was trying to say in my post: the overhead map shows the banner and what looks like a bunch of flowers rather than a "store front." When my "X" is on the spot, there is nothing there.

Corrupt data mabe, try downloading Trinity again.

I, too thought that downloading an entirely new Trinity file would help, but it didn't. Also, after reading the description of Trinity character capabilities on the download site, I realized that the hero never got the power to use anything more than the stew spell and the mole spell, in spite of getting up to level 12. (It went through the motions, but the new spells didn't appear in the book.) I might try beginning at the beginning with the new Trinity to see if that does any good. I haven't gone back to the herbalist site to see if he showed up or not. I'll try that now.
Tried to find Gewin again, but no luck. The level is about to go up a notch, so I'll run it up to see if anything happens with the spell book. Then it will be decision time whether to start over or just figure it's unplayable on my gear and quit.
Thanks for the helpful feedback!

Are you sure that you have the newest version of POG, version 1.0.1? It sounds like you have an uncorrupted version of Trinity and that it has been installed correctly(since you can choose a ranger class), but something obviously isn't correct.
If you never updated POG but just downloaded trinity I guess that could be your problem. Check the version number and if you have POG 1.0 get the upgrade.

Gewin Found!
The solution was to download the latest PoG. (Luckily not too onerous with my DSL connection.) At least I have found the itinerant road merchant with his gate stones, and Gewin with his herbs.
This should end this thread. Thanks to all who helped with finding a solution to the problem.
