Is THIS possible?

I was just reading the 'Ocean EV' topic, when I hd an idea. Would it be possible to create an illusion of a different background using sprite graphics?

Let me explain myself, I had too ways of doing this. The first, would be to create a ship that had no acceleration, movement or turning speed, and set them to appear in every system. Their sprite set would be a gigantic background picture (big enough to fill the whole system) of anything you want. If you wanted ocean EV, you would make a massive occean pic that would fill the whole system, and paste it as the ships sprites. The only problem with this is that it would appear in the sensors, and I can't think of a way to work around this. For more advanced backgrounds, you could have the ship turn slowly to give the effect of rippling waves. 🙂

My other idea is a varient of the above. What about a spöb that had the backgorund picture as it's sprite? The only problem for this is that it would show up in the navigation box. There's also the problem of file size and memory. If the sprite was fairly simple, would the ammount of RAM required be too high for even the G3/4 users? Would the file be too big to download?

I had another thought, would the normal ships appear on top of the background ship, or would they just seem to be invisible hidden under the ship?

Okay, I doubt having a ship like that would work, the bible says you aren't supposed to have sprites anywhere that big. It would take massive amounts of RAM and wouldnt be playable on older computers anway.

Using a huge pict for the spöb might work, but the EV/O galaxy is pretty big, it would have to be like a HUGE pict. Not only would it also eat RAM for lunch, but as plugs like Mugabi and Destiny showed, even picts only 3-5 times normal size still were very hard on my computer, a Rev B iMac.

I think the idea of changeable backgrounds is going to have to wait for EV3.

You could jsut make really big pictures for the stars, that way everything else is on top of it. And yes, this does work; some people say it can only get so big, but they're wrong, you just have to know how to do it.. However, this still makes the frame rate go to absolute ****, and it is really annoying...

The dude idea wouldn't work becuase you won't have any room for AI ships. The background ships would take up all of the ships slots (if you want it to fill the whole system) and then you wouldn't have any room for AI dudes...

Along with that, ships are placed randomly and there might be blank spots all over the place. People would be able to target background...and shoot at background. Even with the No attack Govt flag set, (which makes player unable to shoot at target) players can still shoot at a target with Beam weapons, which are not effected by that flag. Hmm...time to re-think, I guess...

PEACE YO!

The ship idea wouldn't work because the ship would have to be placed perfectly and in case you hadn't noticed the ships go over the planets so you wouldn't be able to see the planets except on your radar.

We could all just "pretend" that the background is a big blue ocean...

The best approach would be to change the star graphics to little patches of water or some such thing.

I didn't mean lots of little pictures, just one big one that filled the system, I realize now that it's impossible though.

Here's an idea:
why don't you try it and then tell us what happens?

Try downloading the plugin "Overflow: 1942".

It's a plug for EV/0 make by the guy who made oreste, it's set in 1942, and there are all ships and planes from that era in there. No missions though. They used an innovative idea for the water, just make those icebergs bigger, and you could make the entire screen bigger.

it's a bit complicated to unstuff it, but well worth it if you're trying to make a water game.

(still in alpha stages)

Here's shade's theory (or whatever) put to the test. It worked, sorta, but the game ran HELLA slow...and that's on my 400mhz iMac with 43 megs of ram allocated to EVO.

The stars don't tile perfectly so it'll look funky with a design...like how i have it. Either way...the game runs too slow to even play. I had the speed boosted to 225% and 2x on and it still was too slow...Well, that concludes my testing...PEACE YO!

If you're wondering about that neat little silver ship...well, it's a secret so don't ask...

Yeah, see someone else confirmed my work. I got it working, too (with a brown background) and got a screen shot, but I oculdn't upload it..
