I do all mine manually. It takes a little longer but you can usually make it much more accurate than if you use a program. It also insures that the finished sprite will come out looking the way you want it to.

First of all, I make all my ships in Mechanisto. So, when I render the ship, I save the rendered ship as a quicktime movie (You have to have an older version of quicktime for this to work). Then I open a graphics program (such as photoshop or clarisworks) and copy each frame of the movie into the graphics program. Once the frame has been copied, I place it where it would belong in the sprite (The first frame being in the upperleft corner, the last in the lower left). You continue this process until all 36 frames have been placed into the picture so it creates a sort of grid (Keeping in mind that the grid should be 6 pictures by 6 pictures (6x6)). Copy this grid (which is your finished sprite) into resedit and procede as you would normally to make your ship.

I understand how you do it but Isn't that VERY time consuming(putting each frame exactly in the right position)?

What about the mask? I use StrataVision, so I can save it as a picts movie which I think accomplishes what you were saying
It isn't any more time consuming than making a mission. And for the mask, my favorite way is to render the ship again in pure white. Then I just do what I did for the sprite.

Placing all the frames over again takes way too long, to make a mask its really simple.
In Photoshop just use the magic wand and select the black with a tolerance of 0, then go to the menu select: inverse. Then you have all the ships parts selected, make sure the background color is white, then hit delete.
But most people don't have Photoshop, so you can also do a similar trick in Graphic converter, a shareware app available at download.com among other places.
Open up your 36 frame sprite. Menu:Effect: threshold and set it to 1, this makes a mask.
Extremely easy.
