Poverty forces this question...
Is there a useable, free 3D modelling and rendering package for the Mac? Such things do exist for the PC (I know, I've got one) but I'd prefer to work entirely within the Mac environment if at all possible. Doesn't have to have all the bells and whistles, just as long as it works.
Failing that, what software do you prefer to use and why? Is there a consensus on this topic, or is it mostly personal preference?
Reasoned opinions on a postcard please,
~R~
Infini-D, Appleworks, Graphic Converter, Photoshop, Kai's Power Goo and Bryce.
I think I have something free by Corel as well... As long as its free, I use it

The only thing I dislike about using Bryce is needing to use Screenshots from the rendered picture (Since I don't want to buy the real version). Now though, we upgraded to OS9 and used the user accounts so I wouldn't clutter the desktop, but screenshots don't work so I need to postpone landing graphics. I only tested one of my graphics though (which worked), I think the other ones are unuseable due to the picture dimensions (so I gotta fix 'em :frown: ). I've tested another and it was totally, well, $^&*ed.

Je prΓ©fΔre " Bryce 4 " pour des horizontaux, et " StrataVision 3d " pour d'autres choses.
Merci. I forgot about the screenshot route. Not ideal of course, but fine for rendering ship graphics, as long as you don't mind doing the whole thing in one shot. Must be a pain losing the primitives though (if primitives is the word I'm searching for).
If you've got access to a PC you could do worse than to give 3DStyler a try. It's listed in the graphics section of Yahoo, so it's easy enough to find, but the site's a bit flaky. Might be something to do with being in Poland, I don't know how good the access is there.
I use StrataVision 3d 4.0. Its agood 3d graphics software. I've created alot of my ships with it.

Andrew, can you please stop posting in french. We know by now you can speak french and it no longer impresses me, it's just rather annoying. Stop it now, please.

I suspect he just uses a French/English translator, be it book or electronic....
He's using Babelfish.

Hey where do you get all those programs?
I thought that Bryce and Photoshop were both really expensive.
Also where can I get StrataVision3d, I've searched forever for it, and the (url="http://"http://www.strata.com")www.strata.com(/url) has taken it off of their site.
I use mechanisto which is pretty simple but I like it.
Yeah, mechanisto kicks ass for making ships.. sure it isn't too advanced but if you know how to use it right you can pull off some cool effects. As for those of you who couldn't take screenshots in demoes, some graphic software demoes do that :frown:. However there is a workaround, probably within a few mouse clicks... go download Snapz Pro Of course after a while you will get an ugly "UNREGISTERED VERSION OF SNAPZ PRO" thing printed over everything you do, but hey, it's cheaper than buying Bryce, and of course there's the fact you'll be supporting Ambrosia

Heheh. I have an all-seeing eye, Andrew. Heheh. Lay off on the sugar, Andrew. You know it won't improve the taste. Heheh. Think about it a bit, Andrew. The answer will be painfully obvious. Heheheheheh.
Speaking of Mechanisto I am pretty good at making the actual objects, but I suck at making shaders. Is anyone out there really good at making shaders who could make a few for me, or any advice on making them. Thanks.
Raddy
All I want to say is, Mechanisto is good. It's not great, but it's good enough to make really cool ships. i am living proof. Go look at my plug. (url="http://"http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/bit/9285")www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/bit/9285(/url) the graphics, i'd say, from looking at all of the others, is good in a sense. They are pretty accurate too. All done in mechanisto. Now my point is, just put forth the time and effort and you can do virtually anything.
