Now I'm in the UE string, to find that I need to defeat a platoon of ships from Station Alpha (I've actually done this twice). Anyway, I go down there and I can't seem to win (The second time) I don't know exactly how I won the first. I need hints on how I should handle this.
So far I'm in a Frieght Courior and the weapons I have are:
-3 Blaze Turrets -2 Hunter missle launchers and 17 hunter missles
I'm maxed out, so no more hunting missles. Also I don't want to use plugs and Parran Station is up so I can by Neutron Turrets.
If I had the money I'd upgrade to a bigger ship like a CW, first thing.
Get the Neutron turrets and the Bronev Armor (I can't remember the name) from Paren.
If you like your ship then sell one of the missile launchers, buy more missiles and hire/capture some escorts.

Perhaps you can muck about in UE space an see if you can start the mission string the grants you access to UE military craft. Yes, get the Neutron Turrets; they're infinitely superior to Blaze weaponry (especially against the Voinians). And he means for you to get Dospect armor kit; Brunev is Voinian-exclusive, and not available at Paaren station.
He's right in the regard that you should favor greater ammunition capacity over firing rate; Voinian shields are weak, and their armor regenerates very, very slowly. Getting escorts may, perhaps be out of your league (or at least outside of your budget).
If I had to suggest anything, its that you should pick off a few of the attacking Voinians (preferably frigates) using the Monty Python maneuver, then flee to a nearby system to recuperate when the going gets tough. The game will remember that you killed x amount of the Voinians, and you can kill off the rest when you return (although this might take multiple trips).
But remember; the defend Outpost Alpha mission (and others) are really just generic blow-stuff-up missions, and don't matter in the long-term. A few major missions end at Outpost Alpha, but I do not recall many (if any) major missions that begin there, so it does not matter much if you tick them off a bit if you abort the mission. Besides that, you can always cheer them up again by blowing up Voinians near Pax Station (which, coincidentally, must be considerably angry at you before they revoke your landing permit).

I, too, prefer the Lazira over the CW, but seems not many people choose it so I went with a popular choice.
