Getting myself killed ...
WARNING: Mission spoilers.
OK, I'm getting my butt kicked every time I jump into the Troub system. I'm flying a Lazira now (saving up my credits for one of the big blues), and have a Deadly rating, but there are just too many ships. The darned little Kraits kill me since there are half a dozen Turncoats sending them out. The turncoats are slow, but the swarm of Kraits nails me. Do I need one of those Miranu defence thingys? What's the best strategy?

Bribe them all

Yes, like Guy said, bribe them as you are flying away from them. That works well if you don't have escorts or enough shielding.
Or, you could try to capture a few renegade ships from another system and use them as escorts to fend some of them off.
I had 4 or more escorts with me, but they stay in the middle of the fray. I didn't feel like hanging around with half a dozen Turncoats blasting me. There must be about 18 Kraits on me. How can I bribe them all without getting killed in the process? I've got a dozen on me at once.
Target nearest ship. Communicate. Bribe. Repeat.
You can clear the system of hostile fighters in about five gametime seconds this way.

If you don't want to be in the middle of the fray, afterburners come in real handy when you need to quickly get out of there.
Well, I went off and gathered money for a while and bought a Lazira. I stuffed it full of phase turrets and forward neutron cannons. I got 4 shield generators, all three engine upgrades, and Voinian armor. I have no secondaries, just guns. I beat the Voinian dreadnought like it was a toy. I can now kill any number of Voinian ships. So I went back and did the mission against the renegades, and beat them all with no problem. Not one bribe.
So now... how do I begin the Crescent threads? Right now there are no missions or prompts in the bar, and some of the stations won't let me even land.

Zidagar-Pozdag3 Igadzra-Kitrak I think Azgargi-South tip station
