That is to say, hotrodding a ship against its type, etc. F'rinstance, I recently mass-expanded the heck out of a Miranu Heavy Freighter, gave it all the engine tweaks, and loaded an Azdara bay into it. It's amusing (though it only has 2 turrets ... oh, well). Anyone else? What's the smallest ship anybody's loaded a fighter/Azdara bay into?

Well, a while ago I had an Arada that launched Crescent fighters, but I disliked it and exchanged it for a Crescent fighter on its own. I'm not much of a fan of carried vessels - it feels rather like cheating your way out of a fight.
One of the most interesting uses of a non-specific military vessel I've noticed is the use of cargo transporter escorts. In early stages of the game, particular while doing the Hatuli run, an escort of six cargo transporters give you about as much brute force as a UE cruiser... Turncoats and the like are destroyed far too quickly to do sufficiently dangerous damage, and the ring of escorts protects you against most stray fire.

I once used a M. Heavy Freighter as a large bomber on the Voinian Dreadnought missions. It was fun and quite an easy way to win that battle.
------------------ Why are there no maroon ships?
How about using a Krait as a troop transport?
(I refer to transporting D'Erlon's marines to the Voinian space station that keeps the Hinwar in check. Based upon the modification that the mission makes to your ship's effective crew size, there are two hundred guys on board!)

Self-destruct your Miranu Heavy Freighter in the middle of Sol and then eject. BOOM.

Its an often overlooked fact that the Freight-Courier is a superb ship when it comes to expandability. When fully unloaded, the Freight-Courier and Zidara are actually equal in terms of weapons space. At just a million credits, the thing is a bargain--I think in terms of value, its one of the best ships in the game. And yes, dare I say it...it may well be better than the stock Arada.
If done right, the ship can be turned into an impressive combat vessel. My favorite configuration features blaze turrets (vs. Voinian ships), speed upgrades, pursuit missiles, dospect armor, and Azdgari generators/shield capacitators.
Granted, the UE Destroyer is built for such combat and is naturally more adept. But there's something about dealing the same amount of damage the Destroyer would in a ship nobody really considers using. I've wasted the Dreadnought in this thing and killed 5-6 Frigates in one go.

Heh, yeah, big mass ship go BOOM = big BOOM.
Sort of like in Pale, how the ore-bearing Bulk Freighters did that.
I don't know if it's a fortunate or unfortunate thing, but the explosions can't destroy ships; they can only bring them down to 0% shields, or if they have no shields, 0% armor (if I'm observing the effect correctly).

Finnally someone who agrees with me!

Oh, come on. Any ship is going to perform if you chuck an Azdgari experimental shield generator on it.

My UE fighter disagrees with you*.

That's odd. Maybe I was mistaken; I thought I saw some kind of effect of that kind before though. Maybe it's when you still have shields.
I once loaded a UE Destroyer up with defence pods then i'd fly over the enemy- BOOM

If I remember correctly, you can strip down a Crescent Fighter to its barest and load a CF bay onto it. Think how much that would freak out the enemy.
I think my favorite was when I used a Miranu Courier as a light warship. Two neutron turrets and a few other things. It could own any Human Renagade, and did alright against Voinians and Crescent Renegades.

How about stripping down a Voinian transport and loading it up with weapons?

I think you remember incorrectly. It has something like 40-55 tons free, doesn't it? And then 20 tons from the phase cannons... I may be wrong, but I don't think you can fit it.
Zax; you do realise that you're in Eve of Destruction, don't you?

That reminds of the old "raiders" plug (um, for EV, now I think of it?*) where you could fit 2 mosquito bays into a mosquito fighter.
