Why are certain missions impossible to complete??

I'm trying to complete one mission where I have to destroy a renegade fleet. One near the top of the map and I know that to move on in the story line I have to complete this mission, but I can't describe this mission any other way except impossible. I've tried it at least twenty times with every conceivable ship and weapon, with many escorts anf fighters, and every single time I am annihilated by about twenty little ships attacking me at once and killing me within one second. This is a game, right? So what is the point behind making the game impossible to win? Does anybody have any answers?

------------------

every mission is possible. i myself have done every mission in EVO. if you're desperate download a cheat plug. other than that i suggest that you turn around whenever a fighter is near you. plow head-on into it's direction and it will fly past you giving you more time to kill them off. but hell, im sure that there are other people here that can help you more than i. <glances at esponer>

I think I know the mission you are talking about and it is possible (I am currently struggling with a similar mission in the Beyond the Crescent plug - see the (url="http://"http://www.ambrosiasw.com/webboard/Forum8/HTML/004621.html#")Beyond the Crescent(/url) thread for some hints I've found useful).

Generally you should be in a fast ship for this mission. I usually use an Arada with engine upgrade for this one. As soon as you arrive in the system turn and run away (or blow straight through). The Krait's will follow you but you should be able to string them out into a long line and take them one (or a few) at a time with phase turrets. You can also Monty Python to a degree to bring some forward phase cannon to bear and speed things up. Just keep hitting the 'R' key and it will all work out...

The mission is: Destroy all the rengade vessels in DSN-2131 and return to Outpost Zachit, and if you can do it then ambrosia should be abliged to give you an award. I've tried every conceivable way and I still get killed by about 20 crescent fighters in about one second. I even got the cresent fighter and added the speed upgrade but somehow the other crescen fighters still seem to be faster, but with the crescent fighter I can pospone being killed for about 20 seconds. It is so god damn impossible and unless somebody can tell me something I didn't already know I'm going to stop wasting my time with this damn game.

------------------

My advice is to try and enter the system and than immeditaly go the other way as fast as you can, when they start to gain on you, cut back and keep cutting back until reinforcments arive.

The reason they are faster is that they have afterburners - don't worry they run out of fuel just like you. You should have one too! Use it!

I have done this one in an Arada as well, the principle remains the same...

You can always load an Igazra or UE Cruiser up on Miranu defense pods. Those will stop the pesky little fighters.

------------------

Maybe you guys aren't playing the same game as me, because I've tried all that stuff and more ad infinitum and nothing works. They attack too fast and are too many of them for any missles or SAd stuff to work.

------------------

I once used a UE Cruiser to complete that mission. My tactics was basic. Being in a UE Cruiser meant that it was difficult to Monty Python those fighters. So I decided to act as a platform by not moving around, but to have plenty of fire power so that the fighters would end up getting vaporized in my reign of fire. This works usually because strand fighters are too fast and when they attack me from both sides, they're too fast to even put at least 2 or 3 shots, and phase weapons are one of the weakest energy weapons in EVO.

So if you want to use this trick, be sure to heavily arm yourself. I suggest using neutron weapons, they are the most powerful and accurate energy weapon there is. The only downside is its cost and weight.

Another neat trick is to slow down the game, this will cause your weapons to fire high concentration of fire, though it may decrease it's range, but sometimes it works.

Maybe you just suck. 😉

I would recommend an Arada with afterburner and speed upgrades. Load it with swivel phase cannons (and turrets if there's room) and preferably at least 10 dispersal rockets. Then do as everyone else has and run away, letting them slowly gain on you while you shoot. Make sure you keep pressing the closest hostile button (R on my copy) and holding the autopilot (A).

I don't find that a particularly appropriate comment to somebody new asking for help, Mazca.

U.E. Admiral: my trial of EV:O was with 1.0.0, where many ships aren't given infinite afterburners. I have only tried to play EV:O 1.0.2 once, and was outrun by supposedly slower ships, which kept up their pace after I ran out of fuel. I didn't play the game much longer.

Maybe that's something you should NEVER say to a Mod or anyone else when they're trying to give you advice?

Well, I know this mission is possible in 1.0.2 having done it. Nonetheless, I have been assured that Beyond the Cresecent is possible in 1.0.2 and have serious doubts about that. This suggests to me that the game does play easier on some people's computers. I had assumed that computer speed wouldn't affect things but maybe I am wrong. Do those of you who claim its pretty easy have slower computers? Ronald, do you have a fast computer? For what its worth, I know its possible on an iMac DV+ (450MHz G3).

Do people play with the game speed control - I've always left mine at 100%?

Alright I'm gonna start a new pilot and do the mission tonight. I'll tell you the ship, upgrades, and time it takes me.

------------------

Just got done beating it. Didn't even realise that it was the Destroy the Rock Mission.
I had a UE Cruiser with 5 phase turrets, 3 mass expansions, 3 pursuit missile launchers, 90 missiles, 4 miranu defence pod launchers, 55 defence pods, and all of the engine upgrades. Took about 15 minutes. You can also take Igazras and Zidaras as escorts with the Cruiser as well. 6 Igazras along with your Cruiser will make this mission quite easy.

i've always played with 255% game speed.

Use an Azdgari (sp) Arada, or a Crescent Fighter. Put the speed upgrade on it, as well as some dospect armor, and a phase turret or two. Make sure you have afterburners and then add some fuel tanks, fuel scoop, other phase weaponry.

Enter the system, and then immediately turn around and head away from system center in a straight line. Lightly tap the afterburners to keep yourself ahead of the swarm, and otherwise hold down "fire" to have your phase turrets take out the crescent fighters. Once that's done, clean up any warships that are still around (though be careful). This approach works against rabid adzaras (sp) as well.

Ditto what he said. But also, I find that a neutron cannon is very useful in these situations: It knocks the crescent fighters back and they never get into firing range. I mount two phase turrets, a neutron cannon and blaze cannon on my Arada. When I run out of fuel I turn around and monty python them - I always switch to the nearest fighter to knock it back (rather than concentrating my fire until they explode). This works with crescent fighters but probably isn't a good idea against Azdaras.

The neutron cannon knocks back Aradas and even Laziras

So, have you succeeded yet?
