Did you ever wonder why this news item comes up...
Quote
Financial News: Bank of Earth announces plans for a universal currency by the end of the century.
...when everyone in the whole dam' galaxy, from the Azdgari to the Voinians, even if they've never heard of one another, uses the same "credits"?
------------------ Question authority. That's an order.
Not so fast there, you get paid in each government's currency and it is exchanged for the credits. I specifically remember missions where you receive an amount of alien money that is worth "this much" credits.
------------------ Go Red Sox! Down with the Yankees!
Yes yes, UE pays you in credits but I remember the first time you meet the Miranu which, for me, was a total accident, they pay you with a "credit stick" worth something like 75,000 credits.
------------------ Ace Battlepilot <mercenary for hire> "We were doomed from the start. Our sensors were jammed and rockets tore us apart from every direction. I couldn't see a damn thing but one thing's certain. There's something out there, and it is much worse than any fed..."
I always assumed that a "credit stick" was a sort of certified cheque that gets used as a last resort by debtors who aren't set up to make direct deposits into your bank account. At any rate, the notion that one can freely convert between the currencies of civilizations as yet unknown to each other is quite startling. Oh, well. On to the next question: Did you ever wonder why...
...the game is called Escape Velocity when the planets don't exert any gratitational force on your spaceship?

It's just for the sound. The development title of the original Escape Velocity was 'Merc', for "mercenary". That's why the original game's creator code is 'Mërc'.
Going back to EV Override and the original topic of this thread, everyone seems to use credits, but they may be just the currency of space. It's possible that if you were spending a long time on an individual planet and buying things in stores that aren't part of the spaceport, you might have to get some of that planet's own currency.

Do you ever wonder why we waste so much time beating ourselves up when the past can never be changed? Do you ever wonder why we waste so much effort preparing for un uncertain future? Do you ever wonder why we tremble at the myth of a Supreme Judge in a fictional afterlife instead of living our lives to the fullest whilst we may?
All we have is the here-and-now. The only being you need the approval of is yourself. Become the author of your own ideal. Play the game of life the way YOU wish it to be played, for there are no reincarnations, back-up copies or new pilot files to create in the world you perceive yourself in.
Misery loves company, so man created God in his own image. Enjoy your own company and be comfortable within your own skin, then you will need nothing but to follow your flow of feeling in the here-and-now.
Ever wonder why this simple truth goes unheeded by so many?
No, actually.
------------------ They sought it with thimbles, they sought it with care; They pursued it with forks and hope; They threatened its life with a railway-share; They charmed it with smiles and soap.
Relax, it's just a game...
