Its that mission 4 the miranu where you cure the plague on new calcutta. The Idgazra say they will give you the medicine herbs you need if you investigate the strange asteroid (its really a shuttlecraft with stange propreties).
Does it have to do with anything else in the game?

No, the asteroid doesn't mean much or do anything. It just shows the Igadzra that you did a mission for them. It will come in handy later. You won't run into to it later on. Welcome to the boards.

From what I know, the "strange asteroid" was supposed to be a vending machine, and the shuttle was used as a filler graphic that was never removed. There's a plug-in that makes it a Coke machine, though.

The strange asteroid does not, however, have any significance in the game beyond that one mission.
