I believe the homing systems used are basically mass detectors. Asteroids have a mass, so they sometimes fool missiles into premature detonation.

Think of it like this: when a missle is going after a fighter jet, said jet can release chaff or flares, which, depending on the missle's guidiance system, can cause it to explode early. An asteroid flying across its path confuses it.

Pursuit missiles were so good before 1.02. Now they are sooo bad.
This gets annoying, especially north.
