My guesses will be: Lots of RAM.

Agreed. I've been thinking along the lines of 40,000k or more...

The system requirements of Nova will not be known until the Beta Testing is over. Its that simple......

Yeah, well, it's so large that there are rumors of Nova going on a CD, not dowloaded.
------------------ All rise in the presence of Dark Helmet
All that is more or less definite is a color, 13" monitor (doh, even EVO required that), about 100 MB of HD space (this is a very rough estimate, ą about 40 MB), and a fairly large amount of RAM (at least 32 MB or so) to run smoothly. Don't quote me on any of these, though; as UEC has said, anything I can say is a guess until the final version is released. These are all I've managed to glean from what people have said ...

hops around smiling I hope shayborg is right!!, lol then the computer I bought would be able to run EVN
Captain DeBlazio posted: Yeah, well, it's so large that there are rumors of Nova going on a CD, not dowloaded.
Those rumors have it backwards. It has been said that EV Nova will definitely be available for download, and will probably be available on CD. There is no doubt that it will be downloadable. Its also feasible to download it; even for 56k'ers (like me) it'll probably only take a handful of hours to download; all it takes is patience. For those with cable or T1 or T3 lines, EV Nova can be downloaded in a matter of seconds.
A couple of things I noticed:
I agree that the system requirements are probably going to remain unknown until after the beta testing is done, or towards the end of it. I bug andrew about the different beta's progress every once and a while, but haven't gotten a peep out of him about system requirements of EVN. And if he won't say anything to the all-wonderful EVula, he won't tell anyone.
As for RAM, as with all programs, the more, the better. The REALLY cool effects probably won't be available if you have less RAM, but the gameplay wouldn't be affected too much (as long as there aren't 40+ ships in the system). Besides, with RAM prices dropping like MIR, it shouldn't be that big of a deal. If you computer is so old that RAM is expensive, just get a new Mac, and you've just solved two problems.
As for it shipping on CDs, well, it could ship on CDs, but then that adds an additional system requirement, although I don't think anyone would really sweat it... Besides, any shareware company needs to have their stuff available via the web. If nothing else, you could use IE's resumable downloads to get it if you have a slower connection, just download 10 megs here, 15 there... It would probably be available via a MacAddict CD too.
Just thought I'd throw those little bits o' info in there.

Well, you can assume it's going to require a PPC, (one reason being, any 68k macs would most likely be to slow to run Nova) a reasonable amount of RAM, and a monitor capable of 640x480, and maybe thousands of colors. (but once pipline or Frandall or someone, said that Novas ships look pretty good in 8-bits, so Nova might be able to run in 256 colors) You're also going to need a keyboard and mouse, but you already knew that... Right?!??
My guess is that if you have PowerPC that's 160MHz or faster, with 100MB free hard drive space, and 32-48 megs of available physical RAM, you should be able to run Nova fairly well with most features turned on. If you have a G3/233 (or better) I don't think you have to worry, assuming you have a good monitor, and enough RAM and HD space.
Again, only a guess. (that I'm hoping is right) But I could be wrong, It's happend before.

But if Nova were shipped on CD (if it does happen), than wouldn't this defeat the entire purpose of shareware?
Perhaps Ambrosia could make a download version for those of us with powerful connections, and let others who prefer it shipped to them buy the CD.

Yeah, thats what I'm guessing will happen. Besides, several games already come on CD (EVO/MR combo). Plus there are those Ambrosia discs with EVERYTHING on them, and they give you a discount on each game (like $5 or so...), so they may do the same thing with EVN. Besides, who WOULDN'T want to go ahead and buy the game?
Also, if they put it on a CD, they can add all sorts of extras, which is what Blizzard does with all of its stuff. The Brood War disc had a movie preview of Diablo 2, I think. The Diablo 2 CD had a preview of the D2 Expansion Pak, I think, and the D2 Expansion CD had a preview of WarCraft 3. Ambrosia could put previews of upcoming games on there, as well as other goodies, like all of the preambles. I think it would be cool to also include copies of EV and EVO, just to overwhelm the person in EV-ness.

Interesting. I had no idea Ambrosia distributed CDs with all their games on them.
It's not that I would have a problem buying Nova on compact disk, but this leaves the buyer to worry about shipping costs (especially since many players of Escape Velocity and Override don't live anywhere close to the United States. Shipping across the oceans would cost an arm and a leg). Nova will likely cost a good forty to fifty dollars anyway (just a guess), and shipping prices won't help the buyer much in his efforts to attain the amazing game. I would think Ambrosia would be far better off sticking to the old way of distributing their games, but they have their reasons to do otherwise.
Thanks for the informal post!
What is EV Nova? I just saw this post and i was like, EVN? I guessed its a new game entirely, but when is the release date, how is it defferent, etc.? I have been a fan of EV games ever since the start, and i wanna be there when EVN comes out hot of the producer thingy :).

EV:Nova is a new Escape Velocity, with a radically modified engine, a new galaxy, 60+ ships, and all new graphics. Release date: Probably within 4 months.
