I was being attacked by a bounty hunter today, but someone else was attacking him from the other side (could've been one of my escorts, can't keep track of those lttle guys). He must have been exactly between us, because when I had him selected with my tab key, the square around him wasn't red, like he was about to attack me, and it wasn't yellow, like he was not interested in me, but it was orange, and his ship was quivering back and forth slightly, between me and the other ship. He seemed unable to move voluntarily until I moved away from him, and then he attacked the ship on his other side. It was strange.

Ah, that happened to me a couple of times. What happens is that the Bounty Hunter has a characteristic that persues you and only you. The pirates attack anything in their sights. What happens is that the pirate attack the bounty hunter, and the Hunter went to attack it back. However, since a characteristic of the Bounty Hunter is to only attack you, although he was being fired at, he went after you.
Also, you were firing at him too, so that explains the moving back and forth slightly. The orange (actually, it is the target changing from yellow to red quickly) is because the pirate was attacking him and wanted to attack you at the same time.

That works on more than just bounty hunters. As far as I know, it works on any AI ships. If you're good enough, you can take down virtually anything with 1 escort.
But it's EXTREEMLY hard to do intentionally.

Not really too much of a fair contest though, as about 99.8% of the people here have macs.
