Heh heh heh. All the EV 3 programmers must be reading all this right now and laaaauuuugghiiiinnnggg. I'm pretty sure that the great They has all the details worked out by now, and unless nay truly profound suggestions are made, they probebly won't make it.
That cynicism aside, all this does make for nice converstaion topics. I seem to notice a few trends. One is Ares. Yes, Ares is good and has a lot of good ideas. If They actually used those ideas, EV3 wouldn't be as seperate from Ares as it is now. There would also be complaints about "ripping off" ideas from Areas. I like the suggestion of a sense of conclusion that was mentioned a few pages back. Yes, They want to leave it to the plug-in developers to finish the story, but I'm the type of person who only accepts stuff once it's official. Plug-in authors could always do an "afterwards" type of thing. Anyways, let's kick back and wait for it, eh?

"Recent decline of Apple"?? WTF?! Lessee, this is only the what, 6th quarter (at least) in a row that they've posted a profit higher than Wall Street expectations? Yeah, the stock's low, but that isn't surprising, considering they just went through a two-for-one stock split! Double the numbers, and see what you get then.
I really could start ranting on how much Apple is NOT declining, but I'm not going to. Check the facts for yourself.

I was talking about the period around a year ago where many software companies were directing their attention away from the Mac and toward the PC.
Not to raise too big of a stink Chresto, but I find your opinion Apple's stock a bit dubious.
50+ dollars per share is far, far, far away from 'low'
Also, the stock has risen something like 12 full points since the split.
Sounds like they're doing fine to me! ^_^

That is, it should be possible for individual weapons, or targetting, or engines, or radar, etc. to be damaged. Ships could then have a subsystem repair rate based on the number of crew (larger ships having a larger engineering section).
Looking forward to the next installment of this game!

Hey like that guy said back on page 1, i think 3D-EVO could work. The Voinian ships would be easy to make, and things could be cubed off or something. Get one of those BSP editors or whatever to do this with, and you have yourself some fairly accurate models. And definitely good enough for gameplay (albeit laggy) on a 28.8 or something.
But IMHO it should have you not as an independant pilot in 3D-EVO, but as a pilot for diffrent governments, varying by campaign. In multiplayer you could choose your race. In duels you just pick out of a pool of stuff (like you could have an emalgha fighter with neutron guns). But you should probably only pilot small to medium-size ships in that. It would be hard to aim and fire turets while steering a large ship in 3D, if not impossible.
In single player the campaigns would let you choose what kind of missiles you want. Like if you were in the UE campaign you could choose to stick rockets or hunter missles into your fighter. In the emalgha you wouldn't get hunters until after the mission where the independent pilot (Thats the person who you were in EVO) jumps in and delivers the message from the UE saying the alliance has started. You get the idea.
Im almost tempted to make a 3d gaming model of the UE fighter myself and post a GIF of it up on somewhere.
Somebody is already modifying the Exobattle engine to do EV. Go look at "The Project" in the Developer's corner. I think that's as close as we are gonna get.
can exobattle truly be modified beyond that of just graphics? or is it just skins and textures, no new weapons/ship specs...

Uhhh... do you know what "source code" is? The app itself can only be modified graphically (and limited at that), the code...obviously.. can be modified as much as you want.

I think that if you have a fleet (this isn't for fighters), you should be able to switch inbetween control of different ships. Maybe that's a stupid idea, you would switch veiws a lot then. but they could make it so that you can have window showing what that other ship in your fleet is doing and if you decide to switch ships it is instant and the windows switch and you're orignal ship is in a small window and your current ship is in the large window. That could be a feature you turn on and off, or it could only come on when you are under attack.
Another thing is, I want to have more options when talking to other ships. There could be different things depending on the situation. Things like "Do you want to Beg for Mercy", "Thank-you" (I'm a polite kind of person and i feel bad when someone halps me out, and i can't say anything to them) , "Can you help me with this mission?" (they could give you a hint or say no way. You could choose what mission you want help with), "I help you" (for battles, when you are trying to get on one government/race's good side, you could use that and they would know that you aren't shooting at them, and it would earn you good credit with them), there are a lot more talking things that there could be, but I'm going to move on.
Why is it that you seem to be the only one who affects the universe's fate? Sometimes planets/systems/boarders should change sides. Stuff about the battles should be in the news.
If you go to an uninhabited planet there should be options, like: "Explore", "Scan", "Is there anyone else here" (there's probably a more concise way to put that.). All of those options could be used in missions, there could be a mysterious map (sound corny, i know) and you might have to take it back to the government who sent you out, but you could look at it first and study it. You may even decide not to take back to the government, but to keep it for yourself, or make a copy of it. The scan option could be used for finding ruins (as part of a mission) and "Is there anyone else here" could be used for bounty hunting type missions, I mean, really, if I was being chased I wouldn't hang out on my ship all the time, sleeping on the ground, where no one will suspect seems like a better idea.
Back to the map thing. If you find the "mysterious map" maybe it could show an area of the universe that you can't get into, or someones hidout. I dunno, but there are a lot of possibilities.
I think that EV3 needs cool plots that change things and are more realistic.
In response to earlier posts about EV going 3D, 3D games that are in this genre suck. End of story. They just plain suck. Look at Tachyon: The Fringe for example. What a failure, its "modern" graphics, "modern" sound, modern everything, everythings high tech, and EV is still more fun, even though its 2D and its not modern by today's standards.
Well sorry if this was previously mentioned but I think it would be cool to be able to customize dominated planet or even settle uncolonized ones. you could add facilities ie commodity exchange, outfit ship. They would cost of course, but earn you money(x credits per day depending on commodities, ships, and outfits sold.)and a customizable defense fleet would be interesting. One more thing, it would be really cool to be able to set up a space station in any uncolonized system. Maybe for EV4. Again, sorry if someone else already said this but I didnt want to read 170 posts.

and who would pay 10,000 credits for a shipment when they could just buy their own ship and transport their cargo themselves for the same cost?

It wouldn't be that hard to port. The only thing that changes in a port is the implementation of the user, file, and device interfaces, which is just barely the surface of a program like EV. That's the whole point of object oriented program-so it's easy to swap out modules like that. Besides that, I would guess that the percentage of EV liking PC-users would be roughly the same as the percentage of EV liking Mac-users. By having both versions, Ambrosia could roughly double their potential market with only a small amount of extra effort (hint hint, anyone form Ambrosia).
About the 2D-ness, that actually can make EV better. The simpler 2D graphics are about a million times more standardized and easy to use, esspecially for third party plug-in makers. Just think about somewhat EV-like games like Terminus and Freelancer, which are 3D but (as far as I know) completely plugin-less. The ease of expandability is one of the best parts of EV.

Being 3D has nothing to do with it. For one thing, Ambrosia has set the standard that all graphics in EV/O must be rendered in a 3D-modeling program. So most of the graphics (at least for ships) in EV and EVO are in 3D format somewhere. It would probably be simpler just to export those files to 3DMF or whatever, than what we currently have to do - go through and render dozens of pictures of the ship at various angles, and then put them into a pict resource.
Secondly, the reason there are no plugins for Terminus or Freelancer is because those games were not made with plugins in mind, to my knowledge. EV and EVO, from the start, were specifically tailored to be plugin compatible.
Personally, I don't think that making EV 3D would make it any less accessible to plugin developers.
