Turrets of Override

I haven't seen too many polls here lately, so do you mind one now? 🙂

In Override, I have been rather impressed with the variety of turrets the player can purchase. Though I am more of an Escape Velocity fan myself, I must say the wide range of items in the outfit section is quite impressive.

When it comes to turrets, it all depends on my ship. If I have a vessel that can hold plenty of turrets and has lots of space (a Voinian Cruiser, for example), I will consider buying neutron turrets. Though they have a sluggish rate of fire, only the phase turret can compete with its range. A high damage rate make the weapon deadly against any vessel, human or strand.

Now formally being a big United Earth fan, I would normally buy blaze turrets for my bigger ships. For missions such as destroying the Dreadnaught, the blaze turret is the way to go. A good rate of fire, decent range, and average damage rate make the weapon well fit for combat. Though better weapons have been developed for use against armor, the blaze turret works well against armor and shields alike.

Phase turrets. A quite handy weapon that never fails to impress any player. But I will never buy these turrets unless I have sided with the Voinians (which I do often). The Phase Turret has about the same damage rate as the blaze turret, while having range that spells toast to any fighter. If you are an enemy of the Voinians, buying phase turrets is commiting suicide. Armor is barely harmed by phase turrets, thus I only recommend them to Voinian followers who don't have to worry about tough layers of armor.

Last but not least comes the Emalgha Turret. Though it may be called a "turret," the weapon does not in any case operate like one. Being limited to a 90 (or is it 120?) degree field of fire, the weapon is a handicap to any sluggish ship. The bright side of the weapon is that the heavy shells are murder to Voinian armor. A ship properly outfitted with a large number of these weapons can be a galactic menace to any ship serving with the Voinian warfleet. The very short range of the weapon means you will have to get close to use it, though...

Well now, I think that covers all of them. I personally have been trying to decide between the blaze and phase turret, and I believe the phase turret gets my vote. Good range, light weight, nice damage rate, all in one! 🙂 (I personally believe the weapon sprite of the weapon is rather ugly, though...)

Now come along and post your vote and give a reason or two...

Although I would agree with the weapon sprite comment, the phase turret still gets my vote by a mile and a half. In my opinion, Emalgha and neutron turrets are too heavy and fire too slowly. Emalgha I could almost consider getting against Voinians...except that the range is half that of a neutron turret, and getting close to Voinians is generally suicide.

The blaze cannon I would use, but it isn't good against fighters because: 1. It has very bad accuracy, and 2. It doesn't have a very high damage rating. Against Voinians, you need a lot of turrets to hit very often, even though it does fire five times a second.

Phase turrets. The best weapon in the game, even against Voinians. They fire over twice as fast as neutrons, and you can generally stay away from the Voinian ships long enough to use the turrets well. Against fighters, they rule because of their accuracy and damage, just as Skyblade said. That gives them my vote.

Let's see...they're diamonds on wheels. Cool.

A good post there, Sattomax! Spoken like a true Override pilot. 🙂 I still detest using phase weapons against Voinian armor, though...

Personally, my vote also goes to the phase turret. I will briefly explain why I am voting for phase turrets by writing up my opinion on the other turret types.

Blaze Turrets
These are the basic weapons of EVO, available from an early stage and, at first glance, a very deadly weapon indeed. The range on them may not been incredible, but the rate of fire easily makes up for that lack, and you'll notice how much faster it fires than the neutron turret, and how much more it tends to hit.

Sure, blaze turrets are lacking in the damage department, and the range department, but they are cheap, a point most people seem to forget, reliable, as unlike phase turrets they don't have that nasty problem when targets are sitting right on them, and don't take up too much space, which is absolutely vital in many situations, as it gives you room for other upgrades. Also, blaze weapons fire in a spray, allowing you to sometimes hit multiple targets or hit one very fast one, such as an Azdara or Crescent Fighter.

However, blaze turrets really aren't the best in some other ways. On an unimportant scale, those red blasts look very basic and ugly, and they make a sound that quickly gets on your nerves, especially when going up against the Voinian Dreadnought. Also, they really do like the same punch as other weapons, and on slower ships you'll find yourself constantly out of range of targets. Blaze turrets are good for beginners and seasoned veterans who are out fighting Voinian fleet ships, but allround they just don't match up to some other weapons.

Rated 7/10

Neutron Turrets
The "next weapon up", as some people who have recently purchased Escape Velocity Override and have played the prequel Escape Velocity may think, and in some ways they are right. Neutron weaponry is derived from a militaristic race, arguably more advanced than humanity and clearly more advanced than the Emalghans, and it is therefore more powerful in brute damage.

However, like all aspects of Escape Velocity Override, it is not a completely clear thing. Neutron turrets are not really as accurate as they appear if you look at the accuracy information, as they fire too slow. Experienced fighter pilots can easily dodge individual neutron blasts, as I'm sure Ankh Starruner did when he defeated the Voinian Dreadnought in a Krait, unless he used the Monty Python. Also, the main problem with neutron weaponry is that they take up too much space. When I first saw that the neutron cannon took up a huge 15 tons I was amazed. That is far too much space, and they also cost far too much.

When you look slightly deeper, however, and think about neutron turrets en masse, you have a more than respectable force. Neutron turrets can smash through anything, and they are the only weapon in the game that can cause so much destruction to anything they come across. Blaze weapons are weaker, and phase and Emalgha weaponry is only effective against certain races. Neutron weapons will help you in any situation, no matter what. When you have four or five neutron turrets, the accuracy problem no longer exists as you are firing extremely quickly, and on a final note that little "pop" sound they make is far less annoying than the blaze cannons roaring.

Rated 8/10

Emalgha Turrets

What can I say? These turrets merely propel shards of metal, and are thus effective against armoured ships, such as Voinian craft. They were designed by a race not even ready for space travel, so no-one can expect them to be powerful.

On the other hand, those Emalgha turrets can seriously tear through Voinian fleet ships. The damage they do is spectacular, and when armed with a number of these turrets even the feared Voinian Dreadnought becomes a more managable target.

There are many more cons than pros, however. For one thing, against anything but Voinian vessels, which only account for about 20% or less of the entire galaxies ships, Emalgha turrets cause so little damage as to be truly pathetic. They can't even fire in a 360 degree arc, making them totally useless as targets, since you're getting only 1/2 the fire in each time two warships make a pass - you're firing only when you come head on, they're making Parthian shots as they move away with their back to you, meaning that not only does the Emalgha turret naturally do less damage, but it also has a halved damage in battle, making it extremely useless.

They also have mediocre firing rates, and less than mediocre range. They aren't particular good at anything, really, and aren't small enough considerably their firepower. The Emalgha turret is good at only one thing, and no doubt you'll only spend a small fraction of playing Escape Velocity Override fighting Voinian vessels. Even then, it's better to stick with more conventional weapons, like blaze weapons.

Phase Turrets

The beautiful phase turret, sleek bolts of energy, designed over hundreds of years by a race that is by far the most advanced in the galaxy - the people of Gadzair. A weapon that, quite obviously, made nearly a whole third of the galaxy free of other races, as that space is now colonized by those who followed the remnants of Gadzair, known as the Strand Races, is free of any other race but them, it seems.

Phase turrets offer you so much firepower. They can pull down human and Emalgha ships within seconds, and you'll find yourself constantly thinking that Crescent ships have lower shields if you enter Miranu space and buy phase weapons straight away. Everybody knows that phase weapons can cause true devastation.

When it comes to range they reign supreme. The mighty Igazra can fire off screen, and other ships, like the Lazira, can come close. With that range advantage you are getting in around 30% more fire on each pass than blaze weaponry, which makes a huge difference. Also, phase weaponry has a full 360 degree angle of fire, and a fast firing rate making it very accurate.

Phase weapons can quickly disable a ship, where you'll find yourself firing blast after blast of neutron, Emalgha or blaze fire just to bring down a freighter. In a ship armed with phase weaponry you just hold down spacebar for a second and the freighter is disabled or destroyed, with neutron weapons you have to align your ship or fire away blindly for ages as the inaccurate bolts miss, and with blaze weapons your weapon damage is spread out over a range, meaning that a few of your blasts will miss completely.

Granted, phase weapons are expensive, and they suffer against Voinian ships, but that's only 20% of all ships, and for the other 80% or so you have a reliable, powerful weapon. Phase turrets are also fairly small.

The only major problem with phase turrets is that other ships can sit right on top of you and fire away, if they have blaze weapons, while you will be unable to fire. On the other hand, most people who use phase weaponry have fast enough ships to break out and waste their opponent.

Wowa, thanks for putting all that time into writting those descriptions, SilverDragon. They seem 100% accurate, and I'm sure just about everyone here will agree with what you've said. That makes three votes for the phase turret...

I have to concur, the Phase Turret rocks! The only one that comes close is the Neutron Turret, and really the only things I like more about them is the sprite, and the sound they make. 🙂

I'm going to side with the majority here, phase turrets rock. However, I don't use them universally. Generally, the best tecnology to use against someone is heir own. While I have taken out a Voinian Cruiser in a largely unupgraded Arada(no extra weapons, it wasn't that hard either, Voinians suck), I don't use phase weapons against voinians much. I usually trade turrets depending on who I'm working for at the time. I use Blaze turrets against the Voinians, because Neutron bursts are too slow. Phase turrets against pretty much everyone else though, UE's armor isn't bad enough to make me use blaze turrets against them. And the Emalgha hardly counts as a turret.

As expected, phase storms into the lead with 7 votes, with the others lagging behind with none at all. <laughs> Of course, everyone would have voted phase even without my huge description - I just saved them lots of time having to say why.

PS: These huge posts of mine my show up again. They are extremely fun, so I've decided to give these little essays sometimes.

I often like to disagree for the purposes of a debate, but a quick check of my pilot files reveals an overwhelming preference for phase cannon. They're just TOO good, for the weight... plus there's a swivel variant which works very well for front-mountings. So, much as I hate to admit it, phase cannon are the best.

Make that 8 votes for phase.

Still, what about second best? I'd have to go for neutron cannon. In a Lazira or anything bigger, you tend to run out of gun slots before you run out of mass - so why not pack something heavy? They're quite viable in smaller ships too - my 'Voinian Arada' was great fun.

Emalgha Turret: 0 votes

VoinianAmbassador, in an Arada you want to take up as little space as possible so you can have excellent secondary weapons. Did you manage to fit good secondaries and other mass requiring upgrades on your Voinian Arada?

I'd like to try a UE Arada soon - blaze cannons and hunter missiles. I'm sure it would prove quite a nice ship, if not up to specs with Strand Aradas.

Okay, how about a 2nd best turret poll? So far:

Neutron Turret: 2 votes <--- It get's my vote.
Phase Turret: 0 votes
Blaze Turret: 0 votes
Emalgha Turret: 0 votes

It depends on who you are fighting. If I am fighting Vonians, I will always load up on all the Emalgha turrets/cannons I can hold: they do SO much damage to shields. Other than that, its phase all the way. I sometimes use Proton cannons, but are so heavy, I usually go with swivel phase.

Its been said, and I'll say it again: Phase does good damage, good rate of fire, and great accuracy... What's not to love???

Sorry: when I was talking about Emalgha guns, I said they did 'SO much damage to shields.'

Correction: I meant armor.

Very sorry

Proton Cannos? Those go along with the Escape Velocity category... 🙂 Feel free to head over the EV Turret Poll at the Escape Velocity forum and post your vote there.

It's really quite simple. The majority of people have their favourite ship as Crescent ship, usually Zidara, Igazra, Arada or Azdara. Thus, they are used to phase weapons and it is the obvious choice for them. And, of course, nothing beats phase turrets.
