I come before you today to address something which concerns me. The blatant prejudice aginst cheaters. I agree, it takes a lot of the fun out of the game, but that is no reason to constantly harp on people who use them. Cheating by other people does not hurt any of us. If we were playing some sort of multiplayer game, I would be incredibly angry about someone cheating. But each of our pilots in contained only within our own computer. When someone uses a cheat, or anything, for that matter, they are not effecting any of the rest of us. Some parts of games can be very difficult, or simply time consuming. We don't all have the time to spend ten hours a day honing our piloting skills. I admit, I have on occasion cheated, and I feel there is nothing wrong with that. Not everyone enjoys spending days doing things over and over until we can accomplish a very difficult task. I ask, how would any of you like it if people came down on you for something you use to make life more enjoyable? For example. in all aspects but speed, a car is inefficient. Would you like it if everybody came up to you and berated you for driving, instead of walking? I'm sure you'd get tired of it pretty quickly. So please, leave the so-called "cheaters" be. I dislike even that term, but I know it isn't going to go away. But I beg of you, put down this unjust and cruel prejudice.

I am not rude to cheaters, but I do apply a little peer pressure, in an effort to persuade them to change their ways. I don't see anything unreasonable about that.
Cheaters are annoying when they ask for advice because despite having a scoutship with a dreadnought bay and 99 phase turrets, they get stuck in the game. This seems to be because the average cheater has a low attention span, and can't be bothered to read the briefing when they get a mission.
There also seems to be a strong positive correlation between cheating and rudeness on this board; haven't you noticed? Maybe it's just because the cheaters are the younger players? I dunno.

I also see nothing wrong with people using cheats in games so long as: It is a solo game. Their stats aren't compared with people who do not use cheats. They don't lie about using cheats.
The way I see it is that each person wants to enjoy the parts of the game she/he likes the most, and what is the sense of having your game ruined if you keep getting stuck or killed off doing something in the game that keeps you from getting to the part you like? As long as it doesn't effect other players or get counted towards tournament scores, I see no harm it. Don't most of us "cheat" just by saving the game so we can start over if somethig bad happens without having to go back to the beginning?
As for being rude on the boards, that's not acceptable whether a person uses cheats or not. Jude

I agree with Jude!
You see, a cheater would come onto the boards and say, "Oh, I conquered this and this and this and this and I blew him her and it so I'm better then you".. And pardon? What did you use? Oh, A DREADNAUGT WITH 99 NEUTRONS. Excuse me bud, but your score doesn't count. The biggest, baddest ship you can get is a UE Cruiser with 5 neutron...
I don't care if you cheat, just don't brag.

Heres my opinion on cheating:
I feel that people should not cheat in EV/O. Those games are made overly easy if you cheat, and they cease to be fun. However, I really dont care if people do cheat. Part of the reason is that I myself cheat on some games, and to dis cheating here would make me a hipocrite (sp?). On some games, cheating makes the game more fun, in some respects. For example: say there is n aspect of a game which is tedious, time consuming, and boring. Wouldn't it make you happier if you cheated through it? I'm not saying you should always take the easy way out, but if cheating only helps you in a small way and doesn't make your experience with other parts of the game less fun, I don't really see anything wrong with it. Also, cheating can be a fun thing o do just for a little while, even if youu don't do it all the time. For example, if you always play Unreal Tournament without cheats and have beaten it that way, it can be fun to occasionally become invulnerable and go around toasting people with the Redeemer. In conclusion, cheating can be fun, an I don't look down on it, as long as it isn't used excessively.

What are these sections of the game that people can't get past, or find tedious? Your first time through the game, everything is new, so it shouldn't seem boring... and your second time, you know enough tricks to save a lot of time anyway. Many of the people on this board could start a new pilot file, and be flying a crescent warship within three hours, and their chosen best warship within five. That's just an afternoon of playing the game you enjoy.
If you don't want to spend a few hours engaging in space trading and combat, why play at all? Well, that's just my two credits' worth.
I'll admit, I have cheated on a mission once. But I havn't ever since, and boy the game is more fun. BTW, Alien, the most powerful non-plug buyable ship is a Voinian Cruiser with 6 Neutrons.

I did cheat at games when I was six years old, but now, I like to give myself a challenge.
If I cheated now, I would almost feel guilty for it.
People can cheat, but just as long as they don't try to act self righteuos and think that they have had the same challenge as any other poor bloke or lass, that doesn't cheat.
P.S the V.Cruiser with phase turrets is the best.

Cheating is bad but sometimes it is fun.If you've played through it a lot then maybe some people would like to see how different it is when you cheat. If its the first time someones played and their cheating their dumb.Who cares? If they want to ruin the game let them.

Heh, I cheat all the bloody time. Only difference is, I completed EV and EVO before most cheaters even played it.
I think cheating is stupid, but if you must, I guess you might as well, but like me -- you should complete the game first , and then you are 'entitled' to cheat. ~Gav

Wrong. You can get a V. Dreadnought without cheating.

I wasn't referring to EV/O, I agree with what you said. I was referring to some other game (no real game in particular) where what I mentioned might happen. I think you misunderstood me.

Well, I have read all of your comments, and I cheat some. I don't want to lose all the fun of the game with some cheat that gives you access to all the ships, that's what missions are for. Anyway, I only cheat once a pilot file, by getting lots of money, because I don't like hauling cargo for a living. It is the battles that count, not the boring cargo missions.

Some of the most challenging battles come before you've got enough money for a decent ship. Ever tried to free Huron in a freight-courier? Ever tried to rescue a Voinian defector in a cargo transporter? (Or even the near-insane: ever tried to get a load of crassworms from Pax to Omm in a fleet of shuttles?)
If you know how to trade effectively, you can soon find yourself in a position where you make a million credits every five minutes... trading need not be a dull, dead-end job where you barely break even. Try it some time!
Well, thanks for the tip, but I still dislike hauling cargo. And I've done half the UE mission string (not the central objective) with a Shuttle, and I've defeated the Voinian Dreadnought with a Freight-Courier! That good enough?
Originally posted by Soviet mikee: Wrong. You can get a V. Dreadnought without cheating.
Exactly.. just abort the mission when you disable it and pray that you will capture it.. you can't have 99 neutrons, tho.

If you want to know about effective ways to trade so that you can make tons of cash, you can download a guide called "trade secrets" or something like that, and it will tell you the good trade routes.
------------------ "Four Flint Motion Sun had to stifle a grin when word came that the brigand camp had been attacked by twelve to fifteen swordsmen. He remarked,' It's odd that I didn't see them, but I was rather busy'"
Me, I like trading and I like speed. In 1.0.0, I had a hopped up Freight-Courier and I liked to run missions to the border planets/stations. Captured a Voinian Crusier one time (and made the mistake of transfering to it and coming back into UE space.... Bad mistake!
I've just upgraded to 1.0.2 and find myself in the position of running a space-borne taxi service (aka a Shuttle), and I'm starting to consider cheating to get me back to where I was before.
But I've gotta ask - where is the fun in using cheats if you're playing the game? To me, this is like waiting until the day after a crossword puzzle appears in the newspaper and using the solution to fill it out. Where is the fun and challenge in that?
Jake
