Voinian cruisers are the ship for escorts, just take a while to get 6

Unless you have a cloaking device they're worthless. No long range weaponry and are to slow to catch up to any enemies you may have, and this is true for their fighters as well. Best escorts are UE cruisers and Azdgari warships.

Actually, I think Zidaras make really good escorts, too. Once you have 6 of them, with their 12 fighters, that makes 24 phased beams (each Zidara has 2) aimed at whatever ship is foolish enough to attack you. Highly destructive fun.
Azdgari warships are good too, simply for the sheer volume of Azdaras they can launch...
