I'm sorry its come to this but anytime I board a ship and try to use it as my own I get an error message and EVO quits. Could anyone send me a pilot file with the dreadnought? Jamesons@home.com

(not directed towards widowmaker) can you actually capture the dreadnought in the proper version of the game, not with any plug-ins?

Yes, first you have to get the destroy dreadnought mission from the UE. Once you hyper into the system where the dreadnought is supposed to be about the mission. Then you can disable and board it. The chances of you capturing it are slim buy you could get lucky.
If you're willing to accept other people's pilot files, why don't you just use a cheat plug?

I do actually know about the dreadnought, i never knew you could actually capture it
EVO Cheat-O lets you purchase all the ships, I believe.
I have a drednought, that I captured legally. However I only distribute this kind of hardware to trusted buyers. (my mom hates me giving out my e-mail adress )
You should download a plug that lets you buy the thing outright.

Just download PFE and give your pilot the dreadnought. (plus whatever else you want)

It's easy to get one if you buy a UE Cruiser and install the superships plugin. It's not a cheater plug, it makes the Drednaughts and the UE Cruisers fight along the Human/Voinian border.

Get the "Destroy Dreadnaught" mission, and then wait until you can get a UE cruiser.
Get the Cruiser and back up your pilot file.
Go into the system and abort the mission.
Make sure your escorts don't destroy the dreadnaught.
Disable and board it. You should have a 6%-16% chance.
Keep re-loading from you're backed up pilot until you get it.

To my mind, if it makes anything easier, it's a kind of cheater plug. Keep the Dreadnaught special, don't have hundreds of them appearing all over the place or your enjoyment of the game may suffer.
Regarding the "game crash while trying to board" bug, this crash is a new one on me. I suggest reinstalling EV:O and/or starting a new pilot.

I agree that there is some kind of file corruption that is preventing your capture of boarded ships you can board them, can't you? Otherwise, 21st CDB is absolutely correct as to procedure; you can't use the fighters though, unless you are Voininan friendly and can buy them, but this is unlikely if you have the UE Dreadnought mission sigh. Also, there is an old string started by me regarding this topic
