Am I alone here?.........

Am I the only person who thinks...

  1. Frozen Heart was not that great. It was to far a stray from EV in that you were pushed (:p@Scurvy) through a plot. EV/O allows you to make your own plot... to choose sides. Most EV/O missions involved fighting and usually required the use of large ships. Sure, fighters are fun.. but not for the whole game....

  2. There are yet to be any plug-ins that really continue the feel and style of either EV or EVO. Alot of expander plugs used oddly, weird colored ships and outfits and were in fact, nothing like EV/O ships. I once played a plug-in for EV.. they matched the style of the Confederate ships, but just how dark and gray their ships were, and how unrealistic the weapons were...ruined the effect.

  3. 3D or multiplayer EV is a STUPID idea. That EV/O was never designed for either of those enviroments, and it would simply be better to rewrite a game that used many of the best features from EV, but not exactly the same game...

I am in no way complaining here, just wonder if my feelings are shared by anyone else on these topics....

FH was pretty cool, but I don't think you were exactly pused through the plot 😉

What about your plug your coming out with Mikee? Why don't you get some help with Aeon, you'll get it out in a matter of weeks, right? 😉

Of course. Its already been agreed on by many people (and I'm sure AW would agree himself if he already hasn't) that taking the EV or EVO code as it is now and trying to convert it into a 3D or MP EV would be hilariously stupid. Besides, you wouldn't be able to do is since you need the source code for it (which it is obviously not being released) and so independent gamers have to start from scratch because thats the way AW will accept new games. Does anyone here think that they can email AW and say "Hi, I'm making a cool new 3d MP EV, but I need the source code, could you please send it over"? Go ahead, try it, just forward me his reply.

I don't know about the plot, but the thing i find the worst about FH, is those screwd up graphics, the idea was good, but he did it wrong, besides it just doesn't work in EV, and could some one tell me what the hype about EVGE (or is it EVES?) is all about?

Galatic Scourge is a good expander, but it still doesn't quite capture the old EV ships, thats why TCs are better, you don't have to make your ships like EV ships, since its a TC.

i think multiplayer EV is a good idea, but implosable, since, as you said, you would have to re-write the game, you have to admit it would be cool, no? a 3D, multiplayer EV is (kind of) already out, its called Exobattle, of course you already know that, don't you?

Similarity between the original Exobattle and EV.....

A few borrowed graphics
-Target
-Manta
-Space Station
-Missle, Ammo, Laser

A few borrowed sounds
-1 to 5 I think came from EV/O

Wow, Exobattle is NOT EV in any way at all....

Er the space station is in no way REMOTELY like any in EV.

1. I agree. I really didn't like FH. Of course I never completed it, but that was because I had had enough of it. LIke you say, it was telling me to go here and meet people there and pick up people there, and I was just like, "**** that, I want to go mess around," but you can't mess around cause there aren't any other missions.

2. Once again, I agree. It can be done, but it just doesn't happen very often. I do have one example, that I like to think works quite well as a UE ship.

3. And yes, I still agree. Yuo would have to redesign gameplay. Like you said, you'd just have to keep the good features, but make a whole new hame.

People must be crazy in this string today, FH is the greatest plug ever made.

Shade, PLEASE TRY TO PLAY THROUGH FROZEN HEART ONE TIME BEFORE YOU JUDGE IT!

I like FH so much I'm writing a freaking guide for it, it is a masterpiece. Nothing has ever used the EVO engine as skillfully as FH.

How about the resource files that came with it?

Seriously, it was like he took a bad book, and spread out specific parts throught the missions. Did you enjoy all those missions going from planet to planet doing nothing? I quickly got sick of it...
And whats up with the fighters only crap? I want huge battles and a lot of dead people damn it!

I liked the ships though.. to bad you can only use the fighters... blah

Hmmm, to me the fact that I didn't want to play through it is good enough evidence for me. If a plug is that good, you wouldn't have to tell me to play through it; I would have several times already. Of course, different people (and different shades) have different tastes, so lets not argue- too much. 🙂

And of course no offense to Martin Turner; he put a lot of effort into it and came up with unique ways to twist the engine, but it just isn't my kind of plug.

1. Sorry, I don't agree: FH is my kind of plug. I never completed EVO because of these endless battles. In almost every mission you have to blast away large amounts of ships. It's easy, but it's so boring... You can play Galaxy on you C64, if you want that! 🙂

FH is probably based on a (good or bad) novel. But why not? I like reading very much, and for me FH is a kind of "interactive" (ok, not really interactive...) book, mixed with flying a nice ship, shooting around... I don't think that I'll play it a second time; but I think universe, graphics and story-line are very well done compared with the other plugs I know and even with EVO itself - and because of this I will complete it!

In my opinion here, FH wasn't great for it's plot, ships, graphics, or anything else any of you have mentioned. I think it was a great plug in that it introduced, or at least brought notice to, some great features such as two+ ports on a single planet, weapons that can "ram" you and ships that do the same. The natural objects, such at meteor showers, the black hole, and the asteroids are also in that.

These features were first brought to notice in FH, continued if FF, were used by Blazer in FR (a good small plug), and also used in NH and some other less well-known plugs as well.

This is why I think FH is a bloody good plug-in.

Amo Vi-Um, The Best Latin Phrase.

I have to agree with UE Crusader. Frozen Heart is one of the greatest and most innovative plugins ever released for EVO. The "pushing through the plot" is the objective of Frozen Heart - it's wholly story-based. As mmaaxx (what a bizarre username ) said, Frozen Heart is based on a novel and is more of an interactive novel than a point-and-shoot plugin that focuses on war, which counts for almost every plugin released (though some plugins were a great compromise between story and combat - Pale is the best example I know).

There are a few plugins that capture the heart of EV - Pale, the someday coming EVES, and maybe a few more. There are no large expanders plugins that capture EVO's heart - take Saboteur's Realm. Horrible graphics, mediocre plotline, painfully long download. Beyond the Crescent wasn't bad - but it was a bit short.

I partially agree with mikee J's third point. Making EV multiplayer would ruin the primary innovations of EV - such a game would not be EV per se, but it would be an entirely new and bizarre concoction. EV 3D isn't such a bad idea - but it would kill some of the innovations we know and love in EV, like boarding ships.

Yes, I noted that he did come up with some ingenious ways to twist the engine, but that was just a neat factor and because I didn't like the reast a whole lot, it wore off.

Wow, thats right, Dave is responding to oooold threads! Well, I just thought I would make my opinion known anyway... Well, mike, you were saying you wanted a really good plug that expanded on the current EV or EV:O universe? Look no further than Vorinth! Unfortunately the bastards making it had it practically finished then just trashed it. I got (stole) a late beta of it, and it was great! Oh, a little history for all of you. Waaay back when EV was still in v1.0.4 (even earlier I think) the guy who made the original EV webpage was working on a plug of his. I'm sure some of us remember that really good frequently updated page called Escapte Velocity: The Unofficial Website. It was made by Jos Delbar (woah there, I may be getting someone confused here. I know it was made by some one with a first name that started with a "J" Jos Delbar is the name that comes to mind...but it may be some one else.). Well, Ambrosia decided that it was going to make his site the OFFICIAL website...so there you have it. Later, he "retired" and gave control to a long line of web masters who should never have tried to be web masters.

Anyway, he made Vorinth, which pretty much was a continuation on the confed/rebel war. Another twist - the aliens were back! Well, when I found (stole) the beta, this is what I saw. A massive collection of EV realitive outfits, ships, etc. There were few new personal ships, but it expanded to, or near to, the 64 ship limit with the aliens, and the expanded Rebel/Confed Navys.

Ok, this is where it gets good, I am going to give everyone out there my recollection of what I saw in the beta. Darn, I wish they'd finished it. Well, what I remember the most was the interesting weapons, for both sides. The rebels had something called "Wall Missiles." They were outfitted on nearly every rebel ship. It fired for missiles simultaneously and seemed to make a kind of wall infront of the ship. Each one had...oh...about the power of a tordedo. They were dumb fire. Another weapon, which I can't remember the name of, fired a sphere of nuclear energy. It was a very slow, (heh, but they are fighting the 'feds. We all know what they're famous for) pulsing-yellow ball. Very interesting weapon. The 'feds had some interesting stuff too. The Vorinth team had the interesting idea of having 2 "slugs" in a sprite, creating the illusion of a double barrel nergy weapon. The feds had this weapon, which was pretty good. Thats all I can really remember...it was a while ago and my memory isn't what it used to be...oh yes! The ships. Both sides had tons. The only one I can remember is the Confederate Eagle, but thats all I can really tell you...kind of fast, but had the feel of a heavier frigate. I remember playing the rebel campaign in the plug...it was good...it slowly introduced each sides new technology and ships. Anyway, I have been rambling, I've said anyway to many times, and um...I'm done. Cya.

Oh yeah, almost forgot, if anyone out there still has ANY vorinth beta, please email it to me. I've already seen it so it doesn't matter. I had the vague idea of completing it...but I doubt any of the original creaters would like that (if they were still even alive)...I just want to play it 😉

yep you are!- but FH was ****.

🙂

------------------

I have to agree that FH wasn't terrific. I did play all the way through, even though I didn't want to, just because I felt like I started something and I should finish it. I did like the new ideas mentioned before in previous postings and the concept was great. He put a lot of work into it and I admire it for that. If he kept doing plugs I think he would eventually come up with something spectacular. I have tried to make plugs, but I feel they are substandard and it's not that easy. One major problem though...what does the black hole have to do with anything. I felt like that mission came out of nowhere.

------------------

Frozen haert wasn't my kind of plug-in, I like the simpler kind of war (like ww2 or the Emalgha/Vionion war) but this seemed to advanced, and I really hated the way the ships like flipped over or what ever, I like the 2D, and well, the plot was good, I liked the multiple ports (how'd he do that?) But it ranks about a 62%, which in my math class is still passing.......

BTW: Arn't we all alone in our own way 🙂 j/k
