how do you get the plug-ins for EVO to work once you've downloaded them?

Drop them in the plugins folder.
Note that this was covered in the documentation that came with EVO. I suggest you read it first to see if it has solutions to your problems.

Note: If you downloaded from a PC then transferred to a Mac, the plugs have lost a vital part of their package and will not work. You need to have downloaded from a Mac for them to work.

As long as you unpack the binhex on your Mac, it shouldn't matter what kind of computer you downloaded the files on.

i put the plug-in in the evo folder and ran evo but nothing changed. i looked in the documentation but maybe i missed something thanks guys

Please clue me in...
if the file is properly decoded, it would work try restarting, starting new pilot file, or increase memory for EVO

First off, what plugin are you running?
Some plugins don't show any immediate changes - you have to find missions on a certain planet or finish certain mission strings first.
I reccomend you consult the EV/O Frequently Asked Questions page to find solutions as well.
