Introduction

plus some screens

Hi there, my first time here. I've been lurking around some time already and I'm a big fan of the EV series (I clearly remember EV classic coming out, always been a real ambrosia fan!)...

I was wondering if there are people still making TC's for (esp.) nova, since it's so 'easy' to do (not easy of course, but the tools are there and it's fun!).

I made some mock-up screens (a titlescreen for a TC and a planet), tell me what you think! I'm also learning to create models with Blender (great tool) which is still a bit hard for me, but it's coming along nicely ๐Ÿ˜‰

Looks great! However, there's one thing I'd like to point out:

The TC title screen: It should read "Whose," not "Who's."

I realize it's a minor detail, but it's minor details like that (if there becomes enough of them) that people will just stop playing the game.

As for the graphics themselves:

Those pics are quite impressive. Don't get frustrated with Blender, it's quite good if you stick with it long enough (or so my friends tell me. I'm more of a Wings3D kind of guy.)

ReinierK, the clarity on your planets is excellent. It looks like you just followed Greg Martin's "Making a Planet" tutorial, however; I think if you learned some other texturing methods to go along with your design ability, you could make some really original, nice looking planets. To answer your question, yes, a lot of TC's are in development. I believe CTC is the closest one to being complete, and it looks excellent. I and several other developers are also working on a TC called EV: Darkstar, which you can check out through my signature.

Alpha: indeed, I picked up a thing or two from that tutorial and thanks for the links! I'll work on some others soon, just to improve my PS abilities...

I'll check out the TC's too! Going to buy the EVN license now, simply because it's such an awesome game and those people deserve to be paid. Then I'll work on some small plug-ins to get the feel again (I used to res-edit EVC when it was released, though I own a PC now)...

Finally someone remembered Colosseum. It seems like it as always been neglected to be brought up when anyone asks about TCs in development.

Those are some nice intro screens. The first one makes me think of a movie poster.

Ah, you're improving. Keep it up. Nice work on the rings ๐Ÿ™‚ I think you'll really like the results if you try using very large textures (I've been working at 5000x5000) with lots of detail.

Seeing your planets yesterday and looking at those tutorials, and then looking at the Aftermath planet pics, and basically saturating my subconscious with colorful spheres has inspired me:

That's great. Keep up the, dare I say, Incredible work.

Very nice. Purity has a lot of potential with those continents, I would say you could continue to work on that one and get some really nice effects; maybe make the continents stand out less, though: right now they're beaches are about 10-20 miles too high.

As far as textures, I recommend just taking pictures of dirt, sand, concrete, moss, lichens, grass, rocks, old cracked tires, etcetera, and just making a sort of library for yourself.

Edit: Gregor didn't load for me the first time. It's the best of the bunch. Great job.

Niceness. Though if all your planets are going to have individual pictures, it might make your TC pretty dang big space-wise.

Is there a tutorial anywhere for doing oceans? That's the one thing I'm not good at. My planets are mostly like ReinierK's (but not as good :)) in that they're basically one color. If you look at Earth, you have deserts, Polar Ice Caps, Jungles, and Oceans, and most planets should reflect the variety of climates that are found everywhere.

Actually, only Class M planets in compatible distance to their sun should reflect the variety. If they are too near (=hot) you'll basically have a desert, if they are too far away, you have an arctic tundra at best. If the planet rotates just fast enough that one side always faces the sun and is too near, you have both of them on the planet, but actually I think it is pretty rare for a planet to display Earth's diversity.

But I have made interesting results with using random photographs as texture, for example of autumn leaves or of my messy desk (blurred in photoshop, and maybe some colors replaced by more planetary looking ones).

Ok. What are the different planet classes?
I also might mention that ONLY planets that share the same distance from the sun as earth are habitable.

Distance, size, thickness of atmosphere, type of sun... all have an effect on how habitable a planet can be. The true factors are temperature, atmosphere make up, and water level. These can all be at habitable levels at varying distances from the sun, as long as all of the other deciding factors are "adjusted" to compensate. Earth would not be habitable farther away from or closer to the sun, but another planet could be, depending on the intensity of the sun, the level that the greenhouse effect works in the atmosphere, etc.
