After defeating the second set of fire guardians in the fire caverns and getting the amulet of fire, I was distressed to discover that in Apocalypse Trail the person standing by the door said I had no business being there. I believe I can safely assume that that's a military upgrade site, but the next upgrade site for me is the Colossal Climb, I believe, which can be approached by two ways, both of which require you to be a higher level officer than is possible! I'm level 4. How do I get to the next upgrade site?
------------------ "You have not seen him," Gandalf broke in. "No, and I don;t want to. I can't understand you. Do you mean to say that you, and the Elves, have let him live after all those horrible deeds? Now at any rate he is as bad as an orc, and just an enemy. At any rate, he deservves death." "Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be so eager to deal out death in judgement."
You're really level four? When you finish the Fire Caverns, you should be level 8. The upgrade sites are as follows:
4-5: Lv31 Shut the Door, There's a Draft (so 4-5 is the upgrade from level four to level five) 5-6: Lv33 The Colossal Climb 6-7: Lv34 A Horse with no Name 7-8: Lv2 Fallen Citadel (you must have the Vorpal Dirk) 8-9: Lv31 Shut the Door, There's a Draft
In case you care, the corresponding ranks are:
4. Sergeant 5. Lieutenant 6. 2nd Class Lieutenant 7. Commander 8. General 9. 2 Star General
You must be a 2 Star General to enter Apocalypse Trail.
Colossal climb should not be approached from more than one direction. You must be cheating if you're in the Fire Caverns because an Algernon Shard is in that level and another one in The Final Frontier. That's what you get when you cheat!

Me again. The one who looks in the wrong levels for stuff....
I'm not cheating, but I can't get into the level after "The final frontier". (Don't know the name - got through Final Frontier once, then went to the next level, where I was turned away, but there was no save spot, and then I died and haven't been able to get through the final frontier again.)
Don't have the Vorpal Dirk. Is this required for that next level? If so, can you hint as to it's location!
Thanks ML

The level is called Alcopyse trail and you need to be a general in the military so you have to figure out another way into the fire caverns....
The Vorpal Dirk is in one of the fire caverns levels too

You will not play Apocalypse Trail until you finish the Fire Caverns, even though it is a desert level. The Vorpal Dirk situation is internal to the Fire Caverns. You simply need it to get your military rank raised. Once you have done that, you can return to Shut the Door, There's a Draft to become high enough to enter the Trail.
The Vorpal Dirk is found in Fallen Citadel.
That other way into the fire caverns which Overrider speaks of, is the secret exit to Infiltrator that Taryn shows you after you return the assembled Algernon.
By the way, if you're totally lost as to the path you'll take, I understand. You end up playing most of the 52 levels at least twice, some even up to three or four times to finish the game completely. Download the World Map cheater on my website if you need a visual image to figure all this out. Be warned though, it is still pretty confusing.

Totally lost doesn't begin to describe it.
I downloaded the cheater files and find I have to find 3 chests in Final Frontier, but I've only been able to find two. Argh - I keep dying. (Tempted to Ferezedit to get some Rez necklaces!) Hint on the third chest anyone? I've found the one right below the start, and the one up above just before the shaft where you cut through to the next section, but the last one eludes me... have spun jumped and fired shots practically everywhere. (After posting I'll go back and find it and it will be painfully obvious and I'll look like an idiot, again!)
The 3rd chest comes later, you need to find all the buttons to get to it
D'oh! Thanks. Found it.
Now I have to figure out how to get at a particular rock to roll it....
Am tempted to go to Dr Tall's website and vote "Too hard". (I must be the only one here who hasn't finished...)

nah... It's too hard I'd be surprised if I was the only one done.
Wait a sec, didn't I cheat to win........

Oh, in the Infiltrator level? I'm particuarly proud of that little thing. You'll be able to roll the rock away once you get to that gold key. (I think its gold....if it's not, I meant nothing by the discrepancy)
Overrider, did you actually win the game? Even beat the Xichra s? ::evil grin::
Sadly I cheated, but are you supposed to kill both of them, I only got one before I won. The other was still dropping spike balls on me

Hehe. It looks like Dr Tall Land has a bug. Hmmmmm.....

(This message has been edited by Ice (edited 01-17-2002).)
No, you only have to kill one. Xichra's death calls the end-game event; it is too deep into the engine to change with the MASCOT editor. Both Xichras are the same so it doens't matter which one you kill. The other one just makes it annoying to kill her. Plus, you'll probably end up damaging them both equally unless you can keep track of who is your target.
No Ice, this is not a bug, it is simply unavoidable.
In case you don't want to suffer Overrider's fate, don't use an Escape Ring to get out of Xichra's Mountain, you cannot get back in and will be forced to cheat.
Okay, I've got the Vorpal Dirk, have the Fire Charm and am now on Level 1 of Zichra's mountain. I've completed the first two trials, and am now at the beginning of the third - the aerial with the hang glider.
I've got the hang glider, follow the xichrons down to the springs, follow the springs up and then try to glide across to the far left, but I can NEVER make it. Is there a trick to this? My husband is getting irritated because I sit in the family room with my PB and swear. A lot.
If you don't want to post a hint in public, send me an email - monsterlady@canada.com - but I need some help here!
Thanks! ML
Yes, I'm actually amazed at that hang glider section. I slapped it together, just meant it to be annoying. Magically, it turned out to be more evil than I could have ever imagined
Well, first, you need to climb down the side of the mountain and find the switch. Yes, you must flip this every time you play the hang glider section. THIS IS MAJORLY ANNOYING. Trust me, I know.
Once done, float across the gap where the wind is and dodge arrows (there is no way to actually get hit) and climb in your trusty hang glider. What you might not know about this section is that there are four different permflags which you must hit in order to pass. Float down collecting Xichrons and bounce up. Now, there is a row of springs to your right side. If you hit the springs, you'll have enough speed to make it to the finish, but you will miss one of the permflags. If you pull up to grab it, you'll stall later on.
So instead, just float to the left and when you reach the first Xichron past the wind, stop. You'll float down to find another spring. Use this to gain altitude. Then, proceed to the finish, trading speed for altitude and vise versa to avoid stalling and collect every Xichron (then you'll get all the permflags for sure) and still get to the finish.
It's kind of an aquired skill. The main thing to keep in mind is that "hidden" spring.
It's about time you answered! (sorry - getting a bit cranky. Was contemplating doing mean things, like emailing you large uncompressed game file saying "You do it!")
I had found the button. It is irritating. Hope you're happy.
I'd even found the "hidden spring", but my flying skills aren't very good apparently. I usually run out of altitude just as the wall comes into the frame, and then "aieeee", I die.
I'll go back and try again. If I still can't do it in 100 or so tries, I'll still send you my game file, but I'll compress it! (I know you didn't offer, but trust me, you WANT to do it. The alternatives are too frightening to contemplate. )

/me's eyes bug out You got past platform misery? Wraiths always get me.

I got past the platforms, but it took a long time. It's all in the timing. The wraiths got me too, but I learned to dodge them. The worst time is when they materialize right on top of you and knock you off the platform!
Yahoo! I finally finished the third trial. Took my from Saturday until last night (Tuesday).
I will confess that I had to cheat - sorta - but it was only using something I had saved from another part of the game.
I got to the end, but the guardian told me that I hadn't done it correctly and had to try again. I had a spare myst potion that I hadn't used (managed to do two buttons with one in another level) so just used that to collect the xichrons.
Whew - finished that level. Now I'm wishing I had a V-blade....
