When IMG previewed Escape Velocity in 1996, we were certainly excited about the title's possibilities but had no idea it would become the cult-following it is today. Mac gamers latched on to this open-ended space strategy game, as it allowed players to choose their own destiny. Every space pirate or nobel businessman with a fleet of ships starts out with just a lone cruiser and must make a name for himself in the world. Mac gamers enjoyed the Escape Velocity's simple, yet clean graphics and great interface, and this one definitely one to hang over your PC-friends' heads. - Andy Largent

Sorry if it's already posted. Yeah, sure, EV has probably had better awards, but still, it's a nice award!

:raises eyebrows: Lone Cruiser eh? If we all started with a lone cruiser, then there will be chaos. I am glad to hear about EV being one of the most important games ever.

Make a name for myself in the world? Does this person not mean "universe"? At least "galaxy" would've been a good word. I wish we started off in a lone cruiser.

"World" not so much being a single planet, but more referring to the entire reality of the game. For example, in the title of Blizzard's upcoming game "World of WarCraft," "world" is referring to the collective information about WarCraft; otherwise, it'd be called "Planet of WarCraft."

10. Marathon (1994, Bungie)
By the time Bungie Studio’s Marathon series hit store shelves, id Software’s Castle Wolfenstein and Doom had long since introduced computer players to the world of 2.5D (almost 3D), first-person shoot-em-up games. However, a game genre that id merely sold as level after level of non-stop enemy henchmen, Bungie turned into an art style.

Marathon, and its sequels, Marathon 2: Durandal, and Marathon Infinity, told the story of a single human marine who, as it turned out, was being paraded around the galaxy at the whim of his ship’s benevolent, yet ultimately twisted central computer. As the tale unfolds over the series’ three instalments, players follow the story of the mal-aligned cpu, presented in little snippets on computer terminals placed strategically throughout the game’s maps, and watch, helpless, as the computer’s brain slowly yields to madness.

Story alone does not a great first person shooter make, and Bungie made sure the fighting bits in between were just as engrossing. Gameplay in the Marathon games was second to none. Featuring well-designed maps, brutal enemies, balanced weapons, a thorough physics engine, and, at the time, the most advanced graphics engine to grace the Mac’s screen, Marathon was unlike anything else to have hit the Mac. Most importantly, however - the game contained an eerie, uneasy mood, fitting for the games’ setting, that permeated every aspect of the game, from the brooding hand-drawn sketches at the beginning of every level to the creepy alien sound effects announcing the arrival of the next foe. Marathon sucked players in, worked them over, and spat them out, nerves shattered, brains fried, and fearful of every creak or bump in the night. And if that isn't persuasive enough, let me put it this way - Marathon was the series that turned many of us into hardcore gamers. - Jean-Luc Dinsdale

You rock man. marathon trilogy is my favorite set of games. the Escape Velocity trillogy Is the only game that comes as close.

Now I totally want to go out and buy a mac just to play marathon again. I havven't really played it much, and when I did I was too young to understand the storyline/plot. But I do have Marathon and Marathon Infinity, along with two or three separate demos of Durandal.

A little OT, but if you have almost any OS, you can use (url="http://"http://source.bungie.org")Aleph One(/url) and get the Marathon Infinity files with another utility (can't remeber right now, sorry, but it's in the docs for A1). They also host demos of M:2 and M:I on the same site, I think.

I submitted a plug that allows you to start with a lone cruiser. It should show up soon. Have fun.

im happy to see that the myth series made it on there.

Are you kidding me? EV wasn't only one of the most important it was also one of the best, addictive, innovative, played, wide spread... must I go on?

I remember it first coming out when I was eleven years old, in the last eight years I've played more of the EV series than I've done just about anything else. I still play the first EV today.

But, this is still a great tribute to a great game.

Hahahaha.. it's too true. Nova is nice, but EV and Override are still top on the list for me.

What are you talking about? EV Nova rocked. It has one of the best storylines for a space arcade shooter I've ever seen. I can't comment on the omnipotent being part seing as how I don't have 30 bucks to pay for the registration. The graphics and huge list of weapons and ships were great. Though EVC is much more addictive due to its simplicity.

EV Nova's storyline was terrible! It wasn't worth the 30 bucks, as most of the good stuff you can get without registering anyway. EVC was the best, it had a great story line, the graphics were fun to look at, and the choices of outfits was still pretty impressive.

What are you talking about? The storyline was bigger and more in-depth than EVC. EVC had a short storyline. Fight the opposing side and then destroy the single remaining alien ship.
