EV: Galactic Scourge (Problems)

I've had EV for a while, and I've been running it with no problems at all on the Basilisk II Emulator.

I just installed the GS plugin tonight, and I made sure I removed all the other plugins to prevent compatibility issues (as it said in the readme)...

I went to run it, and it gave me an error about there not being enough memory and to allocate more to the game. I think I did it right...(I went into File > Get Info, and the Suggested Memory Size was listed as 8300 K. So, that's what I changed minimum to, and I made preferred 10000 k). After that, when I went to run it, I got the following error message:

Abnormal termination at 0x35877E04
Unhandled exception occurred. Basilisk II is shutting down.

What should I do? I really wanna check out GS, but I don't know how to get it to work...and I also don't want to cause any more damage than I allready have...

------------------

Ok, so I gave it more memory (realizing my math was bad, I have it access to the full extent of the RAM that Basilisk II allows) and it seems to work ok. But when I quit, now it tells me:

Sorry, a system error occurred
"Escape Velocity"
Error Type 7

And my only option on that error screen is to restart! AARGH! 😕

------------------

Hi and welcome to the board, SG! Did you give the extra memory to EV or to GS? Also, it probably needs a lot more memory than you're specifying. Try 40,000 K, and if that doesn't do it, try 60,000 K. 60,000 Kb should be more than enough for GS. Good Luck!
----------
As for that "system error: restart," just restart it. That happens when you quit the game too early. It happens to me quite frequently. Just remember to allow about 5 seconds (?) before quitting the game.

Yes. You need boatloads of memory to play largest plugs. I always try 40 MB first, thats what I did for F-25 2 too. I would wonder if 40 MB would not be enough, then it would reguire as much as Nova! I tried Pale with 40 MB and it worked fine (note: these experiences from my real Mac.) Funny, I never get system errors when I quit EVO. Probably because I let the menu come up first, dont use Command-Q.

Well, I just gave it 100Mb (I have 256Mb of RAM total) and it works fine 😄

I didn't quit with ctrl+Q, I used the in game menu, but I didn't play at all, I just wanted to see if it'd load at all. After actually playing it I didn't get any errors 😄

So far GS is awesome...I really like all the new ships/outfits/etc.

I also got GE, and I'm thinking about getting Pale as well. Are there any other big Plugins you can recommend after I finish GS?

------------------

Try Tim Isle's "Empire" series (E1:War Without End; E2: Dark Horizons; E3:Endgame; E4:Empire of Crime; and E5:Heart Of Darkness), as well as his plugin "Realm of Prey." Other good plugins include "Mugabi and Destiny," "Oreste," and "B5." My personal fav's include "E2", "E3", "E4", and "Realm of Prey." Tim's working on "Brotherhood of the Kestrel," which is a "sequel" to "E4: Empire of Crime." Should be fantastic!

Enjoy them all!

Clavius And Beyond, made by the legendary (url="http://"http://www.ixoft.com/sw/dyna.html")DYNA Systems(/url)

Be careful...the last missions are HELLA hard.

Are they THAT hard? More difficult than the Alien Cruiser missions?

Coin toss. The Alien Cruiser was a biyatch, with two hit-and-run mini-biyatch fighters that were around. If (for whatever reason) your escorting fleet didn't show, you were pretty much prevented from completing the mission. You had to continuously hose the big ship...if at any time you missed (alien beams knocked you around), you could basically start over.

In Clavius and Beyond they offer you the Neutronic Kestrel for a very good reason: you're going to need it. They had a battle mission in there that made TAG look like a cub scout meeting. Lotta ships. Big ships. With EFFING long range weapons...(possibly the precursors of NOVA's rail guns...) It was very hard to get up close and personal with your guns...and you couldn't carry enough torps and missiles for the whole fleet now, could you?

Cheers,
Guapo

In the Alien mission, I was careful to not be hit more than once. Still, it hurt: 25% shields lost on Kestrel. And I thought TAG was hard. How many ships? 20? Were they Cruisers? You couldnt fire your primaries? Aaack! And not enough space for the whole fleet? 1 word:

(yes, I said  as well...)
(EDIT: Found the files...if you loved the Alien Cruiser, you're going to LOVE the NPPK Titan...)

What plugin is the NPPK Titan from? And what's so great about it?

The NPPK Titan is in Clavius and Beyond. And it wasn't exactly great...It was very tough, very big, and had lovely long long LONG range guns that fired at you.

I mean long range guns. Long range like "DAMMIT! He's not even in RADAR range yet!" long range.

Did I mention long range?

So basically, getting close enough to hit him with lasers and proton cannons was unwise. At the very least your insurance rates are going to go up. At the very most you take an unscheduled ride in an escape pod...(although, come to think of it, how many escape pod trips are SCHEDULED?)

Cheers,
Guapo

Not in radar range? There, but not shown as dot on the map? You must be joking. That would be unbalanced. Not challenging, but impossible. Think of it: even the range of Railguns is not infinite even if its the most longranged weapon in that game.

I haven't playerd the plug, but wouldn't torpedoes be able to hit it?

Yes, I admit I probably exaggerated a bit, but this was years before Nova and it's railguns came into existence. The NPPK Titans were firing gun projectiles farther than anyone had a right to be firing, considering my EV experience. It wasn't really the long range that bothered me - it was the fact that one of them hit me and took off about 30-40% of my shields. (Corvette, upgraded.) I nearly had to pause the game to change my shorts.

Zax: yes, you could certainly fire torpedoes...but the NPPK Titans were/are Confed Cruiser class or better. You'd better have a fair number of torpedoes in that hold of yours just to take out one. And there were a few others out there that weren't standing still, either...

Cheers,
Guapo

Heh, I've taken out Confed Cruisers with missiles 😛 (takes over 100. I was just starting to play EV, had a brand new Kestrel and went on a missile fetish. I stripped down my Kestrel, bought four laser cannons, two missile racks and loaded the rest with missiles)

Wasn't there a follow-up to Clavius And Beyond? (Which I also recommend to download, ShaggyGlucose) Was it Angels something? I heard it was good. Maybe my memory is just fuzzy.
