Why not just copy your file into a different folder and use one the way you want to play it and use the other as...well, however else you want to play the game.

Really? My pattern is something like this:
1. Start game. 2. Do rush missions until I can afford a light freighter. 3. Do trade runs between Zaxted and Diphidia. 4. Fire light freighter escorts and switch to a Defender. 5. Build up 2 million credits, buy a Lightning. 6. Take a quick trip to Earth and Alkaidon (not sure about that one) to outfit it effectively. 7. Destroy ships: any renegade vessels, reload pilot after wasting Confederate or Rebellion forces (including cruisers.)

When I first discovered cheat plug-ins about 5 years ago, I bought an Alien Cruiser and did exactly as you said.
It got boring quickly.

What was your tactic, hold down A, up and space bar, or W, then shift three times, and go "tab F" for a bit?
Hold A and hold down the space bar.
I blow everything up (save for rebels unless i'm bored). Note how quickly you'll go from upstanding citizen and pillar of society to felon and fugitive.
