Why does EV Crash so much?

Does anybody know why EV crashes constantly on my Mac?

My system: Mac G4 450 MhZ, 768 Mb RAM, MAC OS 9.1

Please note I am using an UNREGISTERED copy of EV. (I just started playing) I normally run my monitor at a hi res setting (1152 x 870, 16.7 mil colors) so switching is typically required in this configuration when loading the game.

I did try running with no extensions but that did not help. EV crashes most often while boarding other ships or while outfitting a ship.

Do I need to break my QUADRA 700 out of mothball to get reliable performance?

How much memory do you have assigned to EV? Also, are you playing with any plug-ins?

Are you running anything else at the same time?

I am just running EV with no plug ins. As for RAM allocation, I have it set to 8.3 Mb Minimum / 36 Mb Prefered Size

That's somewhat too much memory assignment. EV crashes if you give too much memory as well as if it doesn't have enough. If you're not using plugs, 20MB is more than enough.

I have had the exact same problem every time I've played Escape Velocity, on a similar machine. I'm not sure if registration is the problem. I played for a while myself, but my playing was cut short when my grandfather announced I was messing up his computer and threw me off. Repetition of this three times, and that's my history of playing EV. It worked fine the few times I've played it on my iMac, though, under the same system. Try raising the memory as much as possible, but I'm not sure if it'll help.

Nice screenname, by the way. And welcome to the boards.

Missed that. That is actually probably very good advice... <grins> My advice and my same problem just about proves it!

Thanks. I like yours too.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll try allocating less RAM. I never thought that it was possible to give an app to much RAM.

No, you can't use HTML, just UBB Code. For more on that, click (url="http://"http://www.AmbrosiaSW.com/webboard/ubbcode.html")here.(/url)

I see. I'm actually suprised I didn't recognize UBB... I have set one of these up before. Yours looks very good though.... I couldn't recognize it.

Also, EV still crashes a lot. I now have allocated 20 Mb of RAM. Does anyone think I should break out the old hardware? (thats probably a dumb question) Maybe it would work better on an older system (My Quadra 700 still has sys 7.5.3 on it I think)

Which just made me think, does anybody know, is there such an object as a gravimetric mine in EV (I mean in a tactical combat sense) and if so why doesn't its icon look like an old school Apple IIe or a Quadra 950 or something?

<grins> 'fraid there isn't. EV Nova has gravimetric weaponry, but I can't remember seeing much realism in it except for a nice prefix before saying "rocket". By the way, scratch that welcome to boards stuff for practical newbies. I think you're already more mature than I am anyway.

Considering my absolute failure to give good advice, I won't try. But, if you don't mind terribly , would you please marry me?

Or at least give me your email address?

Uh-uh, espy, you have no right no talk about maturity; not when compared to me. 😛 If you could get karma slaps for acting immature... whoo, I'd be banned after about o' say 5 posts. 😉

Sorry, dont think my girlfriend would approve. Just because Tiamat was supposedly a female, doesn't mean I am 🙂 My email, if you still want it, is: ** deleted **

That's it. A female Dragon, a male Tiamat, and a male Phoenix. What is wrong with this world? Don't they read mythology? It'll be a female Bahamut next...

<grins> Well, since you already found your own way to webstories, you need not be converted. 😛

If you're talking about karma, then that's impossible. However, andrew can ban you even if you don't post. 😛
