Going back to the original topic here, I agree that EV was a special in itself.
It's that sort of "Ah, the good 'ol days" feeling when you remember just starting out on Levo watching a defender whiz past your white dot. Yes sirry, I remember my first real-playing pilot file. I didn't know what to do when I first created it, so I clicked "ok" and my name was Rick Hardslab—captain of the Adventurer. Soon, however, I became one of the roughest, toughest, best scoutship pilots in the galaxy. You may laugh, but me little scoutship was the tuffest tradin' ship out there. At that point I was already a hard-rock Confederate, and with my engine upgrades, particle beam, and other assorted upgrades, I could take on just about anything except a Corvette or Kestrel. I remembered when I'd walk into Stardock Alpha's shipyard, and gaze up at that mighty civilian warship, black and sleek, might Kestrel. With patience and a colorful history with UGE, she was soon in my hands, pounding on the nearest Rebel Destroyer, Pirate Fleet or Alien Crusier. Ah, the good ol' days.
Anyway, that's one thing that I miss with both Nova and Override, I never got that feeling with that wonderful starbridge or Crescent Warship. Never had a favorite planet (New Britain), never had a government I was for hands-down (Confed). Ah well, may EV live forever in all her glory and splendor, in her original form. sniff sniff
Ok, back to Nova.

Override is the most mysterious, and also allows for some very interesting arguments (whereas in EV, very few people prefer Confeds, and in Nova, there's no question that Polaris rule). But my favourite of all of them has to be the classic EV, where almost every ship is gorgeous, and every system seems special in it's own subtle way.

I think the one thing I loved most about EV was the ships, for some reason they were just the coolest even if they were fairly simple graphically speaking. As for Override the mystery of exploring was my big kicker (imagine my suprise when suddenly I ran into my first Miranu ship when exploring the void between UE and Miranu space, didn't even know there was another race aside from Vionian and UE!) and for awhile Override was my favorite. Also Override was much more expandable. However for just roaming around aimlessly EV definetly gets the mark as it isn't all that hard to get a decent ship and go pirate bashing. Nova in some ways was a let down because while the universe was a larger you knew where everything was (if you hadn't gotten spoilers here, it said straight out where everyone was in the intro) so running into some unknown race was not going to happen. Plus it didn't seem like there were many random planets abandoned or mysterious or whatever to expand upon. Particularily in Vell-Os or Wraith space. But overall the graphics were stunning, the game play was great (love the plot lines), and the new options to play with in plug creation are w00table. Can't wait to use Port Authority to bring over EV and starting modifying things.
...looking over rant and seeing it is incomprehensible quickly posts before class ends...

Hehe I also thought that there were only three races first renegade UE and the voinians. But I got a scoutship and jumped around And I found the miranu and all the others

What Escape Velocity has been able to do was in the creativity and flexibilty of those who played it. It inspired many people to use its limits, when some people could've gone and used Override to craft their plugs. Perhaps Nova will be used more often now for plug ins and new scenarios and stories, but EV was the first to inspire such creativeness. Override may claim a few great plugs, such as Frozen Heart and Femme Fatale, F-25, and Reign of the Voinians, among a few others, but EV has always seemed the choice to use in creation.
Where some had decided to use EVO for a change, many kept to the tradition of EV. Tim Isle's Empire saga is one such legacy, in where Tim could've used EVO over time but seemed to keep to EV instead. Final Battle, Hostile Take-over, Eye of Orion, Clauvis and Beyond, Bounty Plus, New Horizon, EVGE, and Mugbi and Destiny are but some titles that have graced Escape Velocity instead of Override. It seemed that Escape Velocity offered more inspiration than Override could not. In all likelihood, EV will always be first in many people's hearts, overcoming Override and Nova, despite the latter's new features.

Indeed, The Frozen Heart was, I believe, originally developed for Escape Velocity, and then ported to EV Override before its release.

I should point out, just for the sake of clarity, that a number of these - I don't recognise all of them, but certainly Clavius and Beyondand EVGE and, I believe, Eye of Orion and Bounty Plus - were developed before EV Override was available, so the developers weren't exactly making a choice.

I'm talking about the old monty python tactic of fighting, where you run away and blast the other ship because of your imporved range. After I mastered this skill, EVO and the original EV were no longer fun... I mean, I destroyed two Voinian Destroyers and a Voinian Heavy Cruiser with my scoutship in my first few days of playing EVO... it just wasn't challenging (the crescent ships were a little harder, but not much). The only thing you needed in the first two EV games to dominate in combat was a little speed. **
Aha! In designing a plug-in for EV:O, I dicovered that while the AI has some problems in that regard, simply modifying the weapon speeds and tracking rate makes it a whole lot harder to employ those "strike from a distance" techniques. In fact, in testing the plug-in, I found myself fighting against the same ship i was in, and at the end of the combat I was at around 5% armour, and all my secondary weapons were exhausted. My only fear is this will give the AI too much of an advantage. time to learn new techniques, folks!
Now, once I finish and port it to Nova, it will be crazy!

I thought there were four races at the beginning, having read the instructions first :).
