[ANN] MissionComputer 1.3.0 Features Escape Velocity Support

Today I posted MissionComputer 1.3.0, a new version of my scenario editor that now, for the first time, supports Escape Velocity as well as EV Override. Version 1.3.0 also includes several other relatively minor enhancements. MissionComputer is not intended at this time to completely replace traditional plug-in editing tools such as ResEdit, but complements them to provide an easier way of editing missions, descriptions, governments, fleets, düde resources, commodities, and the game's year offset. It also provides an easier way to look up the resource IDs needed when setting up plug-ins.

MissionComputer, first released on 22 December 2001 after several months of development, is available both in a Carbon version designed for Apple's Mac OS X and in a Classic version for Mac OS 9 and below. Version 1.3.0 supports both the Escape Velocity 1.0.5 and EV Override 1.0.2 file formats. I have not yet decided whether future versions of MissionComputer or other similar utilities will support Ambrosia Software's upcoming new game EV Nova.

Like all previous versions, MissionComputer 1.3.0 is available for free from my web site at (url="http://"http://davidarthur.evula.net/")davidarthur.evula.net(/url).

Happiness. Maybe I'll be able to make a plug now. 🙂

Are you ever going to add the ability to edit ship, outfit, and weapon resources? If we could get pretty much all resources bundled up in a single editing program that was much easier to use than resedit it would be great.

It is indeed Schmelta-V, from "Ah, Delta-V, Schmelta-V!" 🙂

I haven't made any firm decisions about the development line for future versions, but I don't plan to leave the feature set the way it is. I haven't ruled out the possibility of a more or less complete plug-in editing package for Escape Velocity and EV Override.

As would many other people, I imagine. Anything would be better than EV-Edit. 🙂

Seeing as how I am too massively lazy to download it and compare and contrast with shmelta-v, can you tell us what advantages it has over shemlta-v? EVO before did not have a shemlta-like editor, I see how they need this sorely, but what can it offer us EVers that shmelta can't?

According to David (sounds like a stupid new ABC show ;)), MissionComputer currently gives you the ability to edit "missions, descriptions, governments, fleets, düde resources, commodities, and the game's year offset." Schmelta-V only lets you edit missions, pers, and düde resources. When ever ( 🙂 ) MissionComputer lets you edit pers resources, it will make Schmelta-V nearly obsolete.

Well, for one thing, it supports several resources that Schmelta-V doesn't, and it's also Carbonised for Mac OS X, and the Classic version is optimised for the latest versions of the Classic Mac OS. MissionComputer also includes resource bible excerpts in its help system. For that matter, I always found Schmelta-V rather iffy and unreliable - nothing like EV-Edit, but still rather weird at times. I've put a fair bit of effort into the interface (which I found to be Schmelta-V's biggest problem), and implemented quite a number of fail-safes in all area where it accesses files, to prevent EV-Edit style problems. Finally, unlike Schmelta-V and EV-Edit, MissionComputer is not a 'finished' work; I fully intend to keep developing it, expanding its feature set to cover new resources and include new tools.

Sounds pretty cool. If I ever ressurect my dead plug-in (which I have been thinking about doing soon) I will definetly check this out.

Well, since I've already implemented the underlying code for përs access (the interface will come later), I think you can make that 'when'.

Umm... I was working on my plug today and I noticed that I am unable to make dësc resources... why? You can only edit and delet them. But I am working on a plug, not editing an already existing one. :frown:
I need to make dësc resources. I guess I could make blank ones in Schemlta-V or ResEdit...

Yay! Speaking of dead plug-ins, this could be a valuable tool for the current resurrection project for New Republic, then for Joe Burnette's plans for resurrection of some plug-in he inherited, and even the supposedly final version of EVGE that I've put off for so long!

Very impressive work David. At last I can stop suffering and write that epic plug. And even if I don't, the interface is so pretty to look at....
