Agreed. I never actually sat down and "learned" HTML, I just started viewing the coding from websites about five or so years ago. Over time, I basically learned the entire computer language without books and all. Javascript and CGI are coming the same way.

I've got a few books around the place that I used for reference, but I've got the content in all of them memorized now, so I don't really need them.
I first started learning the ropes of HTML back in the day, when (url="http://"http://www.evula.com/")the Lair(/url) was 3 pages (if that) on Geocities, and I was using their stupid little auto-template. I got pissed off at how stupid it was, so I tried the magical source code editor... I picked up some HTML from the EV WWWBoard (I loved that spider...), and started putting 1 and 1 together. Then, overnight, I became the great HTML god that I am.

I'd be more than happy to use XML if I knew exactly what the point was.
I think the point is that new browsers are someday going to require it. Since intrinsically it's so little different, you get used to it fast, and why not switch now? I realize it may be a bit different in your case, ( ) but it's totally natural to me now. One of the things I hated at first was that I had to type <br /> instead of just plain <br>. That's so natural now I had to actively restrain myself from doing it when I was reformatting Insano's page for him, and I think I did go ahead and quote all the attribute values, even colspan="4".
BTW, W3C does have an app that is supposed to convert the code for you, though I wouldn't trust it. HTML Tidy does convert HTML to XML, but it's been known to screw up tables especially, when my dad used it on his pages, and put in lots of weird breaks, plus it's own generator. I converted mine in BBEdit instead (Find and replace is great for converting things like <br>, <hr>, etc.) and used Tidy to check later, then just got rid of it's garbage when it found no errors. My pages had a lot fewer bugs to work out afterwards...

Cool, thanks. Any idea why "**** " is censored? I can't figure that one out.

I don't know what the word is. Try typing it with dashes in it.

Not really the super-good reason I was hoping for, but it's good enough. I'll make the switch at some point in the future... please tell me I won't have to rename my files.

Hmmmm.... screw that, I'll go with BBEdit.

Amen, Brother Macavenger!
I use Find & Replace quite a bit, especially with this upcoming navigation redesign (which makes exclusive use of SSI tags... I do a search for what it replaces, then insert the tag, boom, it's good to go).

Back in the day, someone got some jollies out of placing a M-E-T-A (that's the word, Insano) redirect tag in a few posts, which caused people to be redirected (to a porn site, if I recall correctly). Hence, MΓTA is censored to prevent people from doing it again.

Yeah, I started my html experience in August 2001, with the creation of my first site. You reeeeeeealy wouldn't have wanted to see that one. I learned it all from lycos's (url="http://"http://www.webmonkey.com")www.webmonkey.com(/url) . I can't see the point of using javascript in my pages though, since all mine really is is pictures. That means less for me to have to know
