MOM awards

I was sitting in Science today when I came up with a good idea: hold a MOM award (Member Of the Month) every month. It would promote a cleaner enviroment, as people would be sure not to screw up if they want the award. The award could be a Karma point. I never see anything given (other than Karma) to the really nice people around the board. I just think it's be cool to recognize one special person a month, through a post, and give them a karma point. Mods: Go ahead and iLock if you feel, I justed wanted to say my idea.

Yeah, this seems like a great idea, Jimbob!

But who will be the one(s) to choose the MOM? The moderators or the members? Or perhaps even both...!? 🙂

The idea isn't too bad, but as for their being some sort of a "surprise (karma)," scratch it. OctoberFost holds a Member of the Month award on the Banter and Brawl forum, as well as a nominee. He picks those members by referring to their posts, ability to handle things etc. But they don't get anything for it, just respect for being a good member.

Exactly -- the point is to recognize outstanding members.

Hrm... Sounds like an OK idea. The best way to run it is probably to have one person pick some nominees, and then let the members vote. There could even be two: newbie of the month and one more members who have been around a little longer. EVula will probably be the deciding factor in this; but I think that this may get an iLock.

Actually, it is a good idea. However, we (the mods) have already had a discussion concerning this several months back. The conclusion is that it would be too much work for not enough. Not only is the extra karma point unnecessary (people who do good get a karma point anyway), but then we'd have to deal with the hurt feelings of people who didn't get it, but felt that they should. The thing with Octoberfost's MOTM system is that is unofficial, so no one cares (nothing personal, OF :)); our concern was that if there were an official system, then it would seem like we were picking our "favorite" members (and to some degree, it would be right; I know my personal favorite members are the most helpful). The moderator's job is not to make anyone feel excluded or picked on, but more to build a sense of community; karma lowering and bashing is just to make sure that the community doesn't sink into a cesspool.

Another reason we decided against it is we'd then have to deal with people who think that MOTM is all there is to life, and do whatever they can to get it. We've had that problem with karma (no names mentioned), and that was obnoxious enough.

The third reason that we decided against it is that we mods can't be everywhere all the time. For example, I mostly ignore most of the bars, and I'm sure that some stuff would slip through the cracks for other mods. We just don't have that much time to devote to tracking down helpful people, when this is a "job" that we do in our spare time anyway.

Fourth reason it wouldn't work: who could possibly wrestle the title from David Arthur? 😉

I won't lock this, since I'm open to discussion on the subject. Just don't expect to change my opinion. 🙂

Edit: don't you just hate it when you think of something else to say after you've already posted? Me too.

Agreed with EVula's comments. If such a system does develop here, I would recommend keeping it as easy as OctoberFost's...

EVula, I don't think it would hurt anyone's feelings. It probably would be better if this was unofficial, or run by the members, and maybe a mod could give a karma point to whomever won. We have members who are everywhere; in the bars and all the posts. They could probably run it fairly well. Here is an idea.

Someone is picked who visits the boards fairly often and reads most posts, and they nominate a few people, and then the board votes. The winner can be the person, next month, to select nominees, and cannot select himself. That way, the same person would not always win, and the mods can stay out of it if they like. It would be totally democratic, so that no one can get their feelings hurt by one person not liking them.

As for people being obnoxious and begging: We can establish rules, like that you cannot discuss MOTM with the nominator before the voting, or something.

Yes, but that doesn't stop some members from being childish. Besides, these are the people who lost that are getting jealous; maybe thats why they didn't win. 😉

If its run by the members, I have no problem with it. I do agree, a large base of members surfing the boards sees more than a few moderators do, and they would be better at making nominations.

All I'm saying as that we (the mods) have already ruled out an official MOTM system, due to the previously mentioned problems. I have no problem with there being an unofficial system, one that is run by just the members. Just don't throw the karma point in there as a definite perk to the award, as that kinda borders karma being a "fixed" thing (we've been dealing with enough karma problems lately, I'm just trying to avoid another one in the future). However, if I see the topics by whoever is the MOTM where they are being helpful, and give a karma point, the two are completely seperate. 🙂

OK, it's pretty clear that karma can't be as reward for the MotM, but we could still use ares1's idea. It sounds like a good idea.

Yeah, if we do it well use Ares1's method. I can't see where we'd have any problems. We might have to inagurate a system where if get nominated and lose the vote, you can't get nominated for 1 month, but if you win, you can't get nominated for two. This would releive the problem of David Arthur Winning every other month. 😉 We should probably wait until the end of the month for obvious reasons. But now: who nominates first?

(add important stuff) Also, how could we vote? I think it would have to be done within one week on the topic page. Running tallys would help keep it straight. And we'd have to let only members votes count, since "unregistered" users could make it look like Bush vs. Gore all over again.

I think that this might workout, even though karma cannot be awarded. Now the issue is how to select the first nominator. I suppose we could vote for that, but... nah. It would probably be best in the hands of a veteran of the boards, like Skyblade or David Arthur. Maybe we should use this topic to see who the majority of the board thinks should have the job, and then contact him/her? We need more people posting here to see if this is an idea that should be persued...

And, yes, we cannot have unregistered people vote. That would mess up everything.

We need some more board members to post their comments and suggestions.

I would HIGHLY suggest a secret ballot of some sort -- one of the members would send off e-mails, talk to people on AIM, etc. If everyone sees your vote, then you have to decide to effectively publicly raise someone over someone else in your vote, and that would mean division between members. Personally, I wouldn't vote. I don't like to do that sort of thing, because then I feel like I'm putting down people who I think are good. There are a fair ammount of members on this board that I feel are all good members, so why should I alienate all but one by posting who I happen to think is the best nominee?

I'd rather award them everytime they do something good, then compare one person to everyone else.

Your deeds here are reflected in your karma, not by some popularity contest.

------------------
--mikeeJ

Usually, giving one person some extra praise does not alienate other people. By that logic, karma is alienating people, too. And it doesn't raise one person over another any more than karma or postcount does. It is just a way to recognize one exceptional person, and give our less-than-perfect members something to strive for.

About the popularity contest, mikee, that's not very valid. This board seems very fair, and would nominate the best person, and not the most popular. Besides, on this board, popularity tends to be about equal with karma and helpfullness. The most popular few on this board are also the ones with the highest karma. Besides, rewarding people for each individual good act usually does not work, because moderators are not everywhere at once. I think it would be a good idea to give the general public of the board the chance to recognize the people that it finds to be the most helpful and kind, instead of leaving it to a few individual mods (note: the mods on this board are doing a great job, don't get me wrong) who can't be everywhere at once and judge everything fairly all the time.

But everyone seems to think this is a bad idea, so I guess we can drop it.
