I feel offended that bars on other webboards have been nominated and the Boozerama hasn't. If it's a problem that it's more than one topic then they can say the Boozerama Bar series.

Go to the Escape Velocity Empire. (url="http://"http://evempire.netfirms.com")http://evempire.netfirms.com(/url) Post all your stuff and enjoy everyone else's.

I'm sorry, Free-CGI only gives me 5 options.

So, I decided to go for old topics that set the tone for future topics.

Confeds vs Rebels was the first great poll and debate topic. OctoberFost and htyjang both made their first posts in it.

hehe was the first webstory, The Resistance LIVES was the first modern webstory.

Ares Officer's Club Bar was the first bar; Boozarama would not have existed without it.

All of these were posted in 1999 or 2000, so its understandable that some newer members do not remember some of them.

I'm only familiar with the Confeds vs. Rebels topic. That took a looong time to read through in the archives. Great topic though. Didn't the htjyang who posted there say someone else had registered his name, so isn't the htjyang of today someone else?

By webstory, do you mean a novel taking place in a game posted on the web, or one of those topic-based RPGs, like BFS?

Er, either, I think.

I notice Confeds vs. Rebels is whooping everything else... way to go. ๐Ÿ™‚

I gave the "Ares Officer's Club" my vote, since not only do I participate in it, but I posted the third topic. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Oh well, there are other good bars out there...

And here is OF's first post:

The Confeds have more advanced plantets, safer space, and their ships are usually armed better. Rebellion space is less safe, and the Manta can't really do anything other then get killed. But the rebellion is fighting for a good cause, they reward players better, and rebel ships can actually turn without wasting money and space for RCS upgrades. Go with the rebels.

and htjyang's:

When comparing ships, one should always keep the comparison at AI vs. AI since that is the only fair measurement. Everyone acknowledges the fact that Humans can exploit the advantages of ships more than AIs can. A match between Human and AI usually results in the victory of the former. (tactics such as Monty Python and circling are among the reasons why) With this in mind, let us take a look at the line up:

cruiser: Confed wins (superior shields and more armaments such as neutron blaster) destroyer vs. frigate: Rebellion wins (more torpedoes, more maneuverable allowing it to turn around faster and fire the secondary weapons)
Manta vs. gunboat and patrol ship: Confed wins (gunboat is more heavily armed. A direct rocket hit accompanied with primary weapons blazing sends any Manta to an inglorious end)

When comparing territory, the Confed had the advantage. Any strategist can tell you that a tighter and more rounded territory is geographically better. Some might argue that geography matters little in 3-D space. I disagree. In EV, travel is based on hyperspace paths. (as opposed to real space free travel such as Master of Orion II and Star Control III) As a result, inner systems are more well-insulated. Rebels don't appear (or at least infrequently) in the core of the Confederation.

The Rebellion on the other hand is spread throughout the galaxy. Although it does have the effect to encircling the Confederation, the advantages of that effect is significantly reduced by the fact that there are no other states beyond Rebel territory that the Confed must trade with. Encirclement sounds fine in theory but since Confed is a self-sustaining entity, it means much less. Strategically speaking, having territory spread on the ends of the galaxy with the middle blocked by hostile territory makes travel difficult. Suppose the Confed launches an offensive on one side of Rebel territory, the Rebellion has to dispatch its fleet there. By the time it gets there, Confed forces had already withdrawn because it was a decoy force. The real force was attacking the other side of the galaxy. By the time the Rebel fleet gets there, the battle would be over. In warfare, time is of the essence. The bad configuration of Rebel space gives that advantage to the Confeds.

Ideologically speaking, the Confeds are still better. After all, they were the organization that won the Great War. A central government is far more desirable than anarchy which appeared to be the state of affairs before the Great War. Every Human colony was for itself. The Confederation managed to organize them. Finally, most people tend to ignore the fact that the current war was started by the Rebellion. If they didn't oppose the Confederation, this war won't even begin.**

God bless,

Yes, but if you look at page 8, the unregistered user posting as htjyang changes to htjyang: not the imposter, and said someone else registered his name. Go check if you don't know what I'm talking about. There is no post there by a registered htjyang.

If webstory can mean a novel published online on that takes place in the EV universe, then "Dash Riprock" by Sparks2002 was the first. He wrote Dash Riprock as the very first EV Serial Novel, and I even remember him advertising it with nobody challenging him. That was before the UBB, before the Discboard, in the glory days of the WWWBoard. I think that predates the web stories you are talking about.

Um, no, we're talking about multi-person stories on the webboard, not other novels.

The CvR topic is badly messed up, or at least it was when I was printing it. I saw posts by cable_guy that ended in "Jeremy Woodruff, as THE WHITE SHADOW". ๐Ÿ˜„ They were in the middle of implementing karma while I was printing though, so I think that threw my browserr off. But it is still well worth the read.
