I believe the gap between the Rapier and the Corvette is just begging to be filled. It's quite a hop up, leaving the Corvette as the only civillian skirmish ship.

The corvette is really too good (too much space and speed) which is the only reason there is a gap. You should reprice the corvette to about 4 million, maybe rename it. Then create a Sloop/Torpedo Boat/Gunship type between rapier and corvette. Or upgrade the rapier-- its description claims it has missiles, add some.
The formula is reasonable-- I always thought fighter bays took up too much mass--however, I agree with crafty that fighters should have mass. Missiles have mass, rockets have mass, surely those huge missile carrying fighters have mass.
