If you use this system, be sure to make the fighters themselves take up mass, to make up for the reletively low bay mass.

I'll bite, what would you consider a realistic system?

And Cruiser I see your point. But maybe it has a place as an AI ship.

I believe the gap between the Rapier and the Corvette is just begging to be filled. It's quite a hop up, leaving the Corvette as the only civillian skirmish ship.

How hard is it to use ResEdit?

And does '(m*#)+((m*#)/2)=? m=Fighter Mass #=number of ships in bay' sound like a reasonable formula?

The corvette is really too good (too much space and speed) which is the only reason there is a gap. You should reprice the corvette to about 4 million, maybe rename it. Then create a Sloop/Torpedo Boat/Gunship type between rapier and corvette. Or upgrade the rapier-- its description claims it has missiles, add some.

The formula is reasonable-- I always thought fighter bays took up too much mass--however, I agree with crafty that fighters should have mass. Missiles have mass, rockets have mass, surely those huge missile carrying fighters have mass.
