Tips on using the console:

For those of you who don't know here are the commands for the Admin Console, it can be very usefull particularly if you like destroying computers, it allows you to wipe everyting in the system directory, and file server,logs etc (though with logs it leaves a LOG DELETED message behind).. without having to use log/file deleter etc..
And the System directory can only be erased from withing the console,
One you have deleted everything on a computer, you should shut it down and this will make the whole computer unsalvagable and destroyed , if you fast for a little while it will come up as an article in the news

Help ? display a list of commands
cd <directory> - opens a directory
cd .. ? closes the current directory
Delete ? delete the whole contents of the currently open directory
Shutdown ? Shuts down the system.
Disconnect ? disconnects from the system
Exit ? exits the console and returns to the menu
Run <program> - runs the program you entered. (only works from the usr directory)

In order to destroy a mainframe using the console, do the following after hacking into it:

cd /system
delete
cd /usr
delete
cd /logs
delete
shutdown

You can type in all the commands while it is running one of the previous commands.

You don't need the "/". "cd usr" works fine. And deleting the logs is generally pointless as the passive trace will have already passed them, so you will still need to delete the logs at InterNIC.

or sometimes:

cd sys

shutdown

It depends on how much time I have, or which I feel like doing.

No. Passive traces are done by "people". If there's no records for them to follow back to your gateway, you can escape the trace, otherwise they will find you. Basically the only way to kill a passive trace is to delete the logs on the first computer you bounce through.

Hmm, the description to this gateway (the first one that the demo forbids, I beleive) says "you cannot be caught in this gateway", does that mean traces dont find you? (That seems too easy, must be something else)

Side note--Shouldnt the game of given you a linux computer? You cannot hack on a gateway (though if it were too real I guess companies wouldnt be allowed to sell it)

They mean gateway like a connection to the internet, not a specific computer type.

I believe it was impossible to be traced when on that particular machine in early versions of uplink. However, this has since been changed and the description has not. I think ultimately, you can't be traced back to your own computer you are connecting to your gateway from, and therefore you can't be arrested, but since uplink doesn't keep logs of that anyway, it really makes no difference, and the feds can still confiscate your gateway.

Indeed it is...Also, I do have the InterNic admin password, but when I log out, and start setting up "bounces" to add to the time it takes to trace, InterNic does not have a box around it. How do I have it save my admin?

Any server that doesn't have an account name, only a password box, is considered "special". As a result, these servers don't show a box.

You can only copy files via File Server and file_copier. The files on the File Server will be in /usr when in Console, but console is considered "local" so it cannot connect to your gateway (so no transfers).

Has anyone tried running some of the programs in the usr directory on the server? I have seen a few programs, but I never knew you could run them from the server. I can't check right now, though (I'm at school, and I can't put Uplink on these computers). What do the programs do?
