How do I? I don't have anyone's account name or code, so how should I hack one? Like, where do I get the information?

In the full game, there are missions to illegally transfer money to other accounts. There are also missions to trace such illegal transfers. Both types will give you at least one account number, which you can then hack and transfer money to yourself after (or during) the mission. In fact, one of the fun things while completing a bank transfer mission is to hack the account you're transfering into as well, and after getting confirmation that they got the transfer, steal that money too.

The third option, and really the only one in the demo or unregistered shareware version, is to hack the administrator part of the bank server (which is pretty complicated, and requires a very fast machine, lots of expensive software, and a lot of bounces). Many servers of all types include a list of different accounts on the machine. Banks are not one of the exceptions. You can get a list of every bank account at that bank (and I believe their passwords), which you can then hack into and steal money from.

Yeah. It is quite difficult. Guess I'll just have to use all the server links I can to bounce off of.

You will need voice analyzer (with the admin's voice loaded up), some form of high-level proxy software (bypass prefered), deciphering software (higher versions work faster), password breaker (duh), a fast gateway (you can technically do it with a slower one, but you may get caught pretty easily, or have trouble doing all you want), and a monitor-bypass is a good idea too.

I'd suggest just writing down everything on a piece of paper, disconnecting and deleting your logs, then going back and stealing money later.

Remember, delete all evidence of the transfers, on both accounts, and delete your logs on InterNIC (or the test machine if you perfer that one). As this is the demo we're talking about, you may not be able to enjoy the money because your rating with increase quite a bit.

I don't see how anyone has done this in the demo... I can't get enough to purchase the Security software before the cutoff.

The security systems are not really all that necessary. All they are for is a last resort sort of thing so that you can detonate your gateway if the cops come. Its better just to cover your tracks by removing logs.

Yeah, the demo/shareware doesn't let you get any of the really powerful gateways. One more reason to register!

Actually, folks- You CAN get better gateways in the demo! Download any gateway mod from (url="http://"http://www.modlink.net")Modlink(/url) and use RedshirtX to decrypt data.dat, then edit the gatewaydefs file and stick that gateway's info into one of the top two spots. Then simply open graphics.dat and stick the gateway's images in there, appropriately named of course. Voila!

If popular demand dictates, I can make an actual guide for this, like, with screenshots and stuff... But for right now, out of laziness and not wanting to kill a potential selling point, I won't.

Well, yeah! We ARE hacking Uplink! That's always been a part of the game.

I am unsure about this. The process detailed above used to be the only way to implement custom gateways at all, and it was just a natural extrapolation to extend that to the demo. Now we have custom gateways you never need to open the files for...

Remember, that kind of thing was intended. I think it'd be cool to get people playing around with hacking the game. And, just to clarify, I never suggested this was an alternative to buying the game. There's no hack that'll let you get cooler missions, or play the storyline. I'm not turning the demo into the full game, just giving people a taste of the game. Okay, a big taste. But a taste.

And I dunno about piracy. I mean, the demo files aren't encrypted any better than the full game's. There must be a reason, neh?

Y'know. It's the spirit of Uplink. Hacking doesn't have to stay inside the application.

(edit)Just as an afterthought, I hope the kind of thing that used to be encouraged doesn't become discouraged in the Mac community. Think about it.(/edit)

There is a way to get loads of money and keep the demo from locking you out. Basiclly, keep your rating down. There are a few ways to do that: piss of Uplink by attempting to hack them or abandon some missions. You can prolong your game time for a while with this. I've gotten Trace Tracker 4, Proxy Bypass 5, Firewall Bypass 4, 200 Turbo CPU, Elliptical Curve 3, Voice Analyzer and some other assorted stuff. w00t. I cant wait to buy the full version...

I have actually successfully hacked a couple of banks on the demo. I'll tell you what I did:
()First of all I earned a lot of money (I didn't let my rank get to high by abandoning missions) and bought Proxy Disabler 5.0, Voice Analyser and Decrypter 3.0. That's pretty much all you need. It helps if you have a few RAM upgrades. (To use the voice analyser, find the number of the administrator on your bank's public server, then activated the program and called him up - you can't do this with the Uplink bank)
()I then hacked into the bank, bouncing it through pretty much every site on my bookmarks. I did the three admin security systems (you don't have to do them all at once, you can do one, then log out and do another...
(*)I then went into the account numbers section and wrote down a few numbers and passwords, before logging out...

At this point try and do everything as fast as possible, as the bank's passive trace takes only a couple of minutes...
()I then went into the account and took out the maximum loan I could do and disabled the Proxy Server, before transferring the money to an account that I had created in the bank (rather than my uplink account, because otherwise I would spend more time disconnecting, and the bank would trace me).
() I then used log deleter to delete the bank statement in the hacked account. I also deleted the statement in my own account.
(*)I then went to IAC (or whatever the last server you bounced through was) and deleted the logs.

...And that's it. Unfortunately doing a successful bank job means that you get your rank raised too high and forced to quit :rolleyes:

I've been doing more or less the exact same thing as Jamin!

BUT if your rank is at beginner (at least in my case) you get to keep the money. Most of the accounts I couldn't get a loan, I still transferred their balance (about 2000 - 10000 credits). In one account (nr. 1278814) on the Palmtop bank I once transferred 800000 (no typos!) credits. Now this might have been a fluke, has anybody else hacked accounts with such a huge balance?

After that whammy I upgraded to the gateway with the most memory slots and bought all the LAN equipment. With the LAN upgrades you can go play around on the sample LAN server. Enjoy! (I sure did).

Thanks for the heads up. I just hacked the Matrix Bank (though it would be fitting). Before I did I abandoned like 5 jobs. You can't get lower then Beginner but at least it didn't stop the demo after the bank hack. After the bank hack I then went and rejected some more missions to get me down to Novice level.

Got 900k from the bank job. Going to go spend it now.
