I miss everyone.

Avara has really become just a fairly small group of people that like to get together and play this certain game. I like that.

I like that too, but what did it do for the Commodore 64? Absolutely nothing.

Excuse my ignorace, but what exactly are you refering to with the Commodore 64?

I think that just about proves my point. 😉

The Commodore 64 was a console/personal computer from the mid-eighties that has always had a rabid fan base, but it never stopped it from failing miserably. There are still some out there, but most people are ignorant of it.

I see. Well, I would think that's a bit different from Avara. An entire console/personal computer would need a large amount of users/consumers to support it, while Avara is just a simple sharware game that only needs a good person to keep avara.org up and Ambrosia to keep the tracker up.

As far as comparisons go, mine was more a simile than a metaphor. I don't truly believe Avara is in immediate trouble. I just don't feel that what it has now is enough to keep it going for five year. Note, of course, that I have absolutely no firm figures on the number of people playing, the usage of the tracker, or Avara.org. If someone would like to give me any kind of figures on that it would be much appreciated.

I for one don't think Avara will ever really die out. Though, most of the time, I can't even see five weeks into the future, so I can't really say much about five years from now.

Why is that?

Because there will always be a couple of people who still want to play it, just like the people who like to play Atari games. Also, it is cheap to keep running: truely only the tracker needs to run for Avara to still work(though a place with level downloads is also good to have ;)).

Who runs the tracker?

Ditto on that one. Many of the Ares members are certain that Ares is a dying game, but I for one won't stop playing it anytime soon. In fact, I believe Ares is much more popular than Avara at the current moment...

Anyone know why GameRanger doesn't support Avara?

As far as I can recall Gameranger came out after Avara and it's more of an issue of Avara not supporting Gameranger than anything else. I could also just be talking out of my ass.

Ambrosia.

As for Gameranger: yeah I think they might be incompatable. Also, there really isn't much need for Avara on Gameranger beyond that it might increase popularity.

As for Ares: I'm not really sure about how many people still play that, but I do know a server on Gameranger is usually up.

It is sad that Avara is being allowed to 'fade away'. I played it avidly for a while, but lately I've been doing other things...

Ares games have seemed to pick up at GameRanger lately. I used to have to wait for hours before finding another player, but I now sometimes see up to four Ares games being played at once. I believe Patrick's post at the Officer's Club had something to do with it...
