uh, the technology in the CGE is already outdated. it has been for a year or two now. the reason we're all going to use it is not because it's cutting edge, but because it's better than nothing. that's not to say that CGE is bad , just that it's all were going to get (I don't think Blizzard is dishing out copies of their dynamic perspective engine, and last I checked Bioware wasn't sending us all freebies of the infinity engine). what I mean is, we're going to be working with outdated technology so long as we don't go out and program our own engine (and even then it won't stand up to industry leaders). it's not a bad engine, but it is not on the forefront of modern technology -- and it never was.

I understand, but the sooner we can start developing with it, the less advanced it will be when we can release a product.
On the other hand, I would rather have a complete, full-featured, bug-free product (with party support )released tomorrow than an incomplete rushed product released today.

Well, as I understand it (now I can't remember if this is true, or if I just heard this as gossip), The Hobbit was the first largely popular Fantasy Novel, and the Lord of the Rings was the first largely popular Fantasy Trilogy. Basicly, Middle Earth was the pionier of the fantasy world of today.
As for the game, what part of Middle Earth are you planning on you game being about, you you do decide to go ahead and make it? As respect to Tolkien, I'd ask you to stay in on the central continent. The Western and Southern are better left to one's own imagination (hence the name "Middle" Earth, because the continent's in the middle).
side note And does anyone know how the LotR movies are coming? As I understand it, there's one coming out this winter, one the next winter, and the last the winter after that. Is that right?

1.) you got the movie thing pretty much correct. (I read Entertainment Weekly a little too much...). I got my first preview of LotR when I went to see Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (go see it in theaters if you haven't. It won't have the same imapct on a small screen). the preview looked alright. I couldn't really tell you much, other than that they seem to have the basic feel for scenery so far. as long as they don't bog it down with too many pop stars, I figure they can't screw it up THAT badly...
2.) Not that my opinion should sway you, I would actaully prefer it if any game made based on the Middle Earth universe didn't dwell to long on events covered previously in the books. they've already been done, and done better (no offense) than any of us would be able to redo them. I think you open up a whole new realm of possibilities if you try to concentrate on some of the more distant aspects of Middle Earth, like Rhun to the east, or the southern desert realms, or maybe the Dunedain kingdoms of the north, or even the whole plain war thing and the barrow king region west of the misty mountains. I am also personaly against trying to recreate the whole "west of the ocean" region talked about in the books, as it is only used as a foil and as a way to give depth to the elves/Gondor. There are about 0 hard facts given on "the west."
3.) Oh, and you guessed it. I know a good amount of useless stuff about Tolkien's world (I inherited a first edition collectors set of the 5 books from my parents, so go figure...). Good stories. Even better study on how to work with mythology. If you're ever in need of a reference to something that you can't find on your own, I might be able to help you out (might). And like I said -- I'd love to work on a Middle Earth game, if it weren't for all the logistical/legal issues. who knows. If you can find a way around the copyright problems, I'd be interested.
