ok something this whole discussion is lacking is a place where we can share our plans, so I'm starting this area of discussion about Character Classes. Tell each other what character classes you're gonna make- if your RPG gives you a choice of course. So go ahead and start, I think everyone can benefit by seeing just how much better their ideas are than yours ... Feel free to add other ideas and please start more discussions like this, like about spell ideas, and monsters/enemies, storylines, etc. Have fun!
------------------ Yeah I'm confused by this signature thing... Lorenoth? right...
I only recently started thinking up my story, but I think that I will have a class change system similar to Final Fantasy Tactics' if it's humanly possible under Coldstone. For those of you who don't know, FFT had a job class system that allowed you to progress in job levels independently of character levels. With these job points you could buy skills specific to that job. Certain jobs would require you had attained certain levels of mastery in other jobs. It was one of the most fun-to-mess-with systems I've ever used...Unfortunately, as I haven't even made a setting for my game yet, I don't really know about character classes. It would be nice to be able to have martial artist as a job class...Come to think of it, I could have various styles, but I would then have to show preferences to different styles and I'm not enough of an expert to do that...I'll post soon with ideas that I think others might like.

well slacker, thanks for making this deserted discussion area a little more less deserted.. or something.. yeah I like that, more less deserted.... no... it doesn't quite work... riiiiiiight........ yeah well apparently people don't want to DISCUSS THEIR IDEAS GOSH DANG NIT! or yeah
Ok, I'm just putting this up for fun as much as anything else; I think it might be nearly impossible to implement, but here's what I'd think for the martial arts thing. I could have it set up into groups like hard martial arts vs. soft martial arts, chinese vs. Korean/Japanese, internal vs. external, and the major styles would be there...You could utilize techniques from maybe up to 4 styles at a time or something...Probably impossible to do in Coldstone without about a year of hacking, and making a martial arts real time fight system would be mad hard. Here're my thoughts on other peoples' character classes: Thieves are cool! They shouldn't be especially powerful though, maybe have a high critical hit rate. It's just fun to steal stuff. And have really bizarre items that you don't even have to have a use for up for stealing. I like those things, but maybe other people don't...Also, don't just have "Fighter". Maybe a knight type guy, a more barbarian type guy, a spearman whose attacks might not be as powerful but he'd have longer range and maybe the ability to throw a spear, etc. This advice applies to high tech rpg's too! Of course, some of my ideas might change if I knew one character could not change classes...
Ok I'm a Mage in all RPG games that let me play as one, so I need the fighter types to back me up while I'm busy chanting. But I like your idea of different varieties, I'm planning on the main fighter really being a Paladin of sorts...
Again, variety in the magic user section would be good. And one thing I forgot to mention is that completely original character classes are of course a pluss, and if you come up with a good one you should sort of incorparate it into the story. Not just a mage anymore! Um, priests, and wizards, and and summoners, and elementalists, and and and um people who draw out magic atributes of their weapons in ways that others can't but have little/no base skills! wooooow!!!!!!...yeah. Originality is key. And Kippered herring. Herring is key.
There's no classes in my game (which is more of an adventure game actually), you start out as Dansaak Harth, son of Barlaan Harth the head of the Senate.

Sounds interesting....on that note, I'm not planning on having classes either. I might have a choice between a male and a female character, but I doubt it.

No classes for me. You have to start out as and stay as an 18 year old boy named Sennen. I think I might use exp. points to make your attacks just a little more powerful, but it won't show on any interface.

Something really cool when I'll own Coldstone (if I own it one day...) is that I'll finally be able to take my REVENGE on YOU, casters and magicians !
I'm always angry about the casters classes that are twice more powerful than the warrior and melee-combat classes.
When I'll make my game, it won't be like that.
What I'll do as classes will of course have magicians (or it is not a RPG game...) but it will have many different classes of warriors, some more barbarians, some more tactical... well, their abilities WILL equal the best caster's spells.
Have fun.

Mages tend to be harder to play than warriors, although I guess it depends on the game. I fully intend to equalize all the classes I create, although my mage loving nature could get in the way, heeheeheehee....... Criminitly, it's gonna be hard to do this!
There are literally hundreds of classes you could make up (or borrow) cool class names from fantasy books. I intend to make a lot of classses, so my game will be appealing to people of any preference. However, I will try to stay away from the cliches like ranger, fighter, paladin, mage etc...

Yeah the problem with so many classes is they can blur together, like Warlocks, Necromancers, etc... So I'm gonna have Brigand(almost a thief, but a skilled Archer as well), Sorcerer(which branches off into Warlock, Channeler, Changeling, and Chanter{not enchanter, just chanter}), then a Battle Lord(kinda like a warrior but you can choose to give him some spells to make him a paladin or Battle Mage, but he can also go strictly combat or even a thief of sorts) and then I'll add Priest of Zentau(cleric type guy except it's a cleric and a druid combined with limited teleportation spells to boot). I'm having a choice of classes, but not one of sex, so you have to be a guy. It's ok though, because there are NPC's who will join your party(if I can add them of course) that will be of both genders. -My Baldur's Gate party was entirely female except good old Minsc, and those courtesans would try and flirt with Dynaheir, well I'll try and make NPC's be smart enough to know the difference between sexes....
An example of a elementalist큦 skill system: (if possible to make) When he reaches a new level you coul choose between fire, earth, water, air, and maybe some other skills to improve.
Then I could make: (if possible) Firebolt: damg 2-5 +1 pr.fire skill level. This is how I hope I can create advanced caste systems in ColdStone.
Interesting, sounds like Diablo2 almost...

The plotline to Shadowblade would only work out if you were a human male and not a mage. Other than that, players can be whatever they want -- depending upon what I put in. Expect the usual, though; warrior, thief, barbarian, etc.
