thread weighing the pro's and con's of the different tournament styles

Looks good, Hyko 🙂
Could not try the resut submition, but the rest worked fine, good presentation of results too in the sample data you had (though you could alternate the table row colours 😉 ).

You have a point in that it would be possibly be easier just to enter the results online in some sort of form than e-mail them - that way there doesn't need to be any access to a sendmail server to parse incoming messages etc (and, of course, you don't need to set up a mail account).

What about the log-in being an e-mail address with username attached to it though (either could be a primary key, but I guess e-mail is definitely going to be unique) ? This also has the advantage that you could e-mail the people in question with an automated message if you get collisions on results (e.g. A said they beat B 3-1, and B thought they had beaten A 3-2 etc) Brings in the need for sendmail, but I guess you have access to that (unix server?), and PHP/Perl mail code is fairly straightforward.

Good work 🙂

Hyko's project looks really cool, but I can't commit to it. This project does something that I already had something planned for. I wish someone could have asked me before they started this.

Anyone who does disagree, I am sorry and I am not going to argue this. I am not going to have a repeat of last week.

**So I made my first steps with PHP and mySQL (I only knew ASP/VB before) and programmed a tourney-system which up to now is able to completely support the tourneyhost during the first round.

It provides the following functions for the host:
- Create a new tourney with status "open" where registered users can sign in
- Change the status to "closed" if no further users should be able to sign in
- Change the status to "in progress" to allow those players who signed in to the tourney to report their results
- During Tourneys the host can sign in additional (e.g. late players) or sign out other players
- Check and manipulate all results of the tournament. Host will get a warning if opponents reported different results
- Change status "to finished" if all scores should be frozen
- Change status of tourney to "canceled" if it will not take place

and this functions for Players:
- Register
- Sign in to tourneys which are open
- Sign out from tourneys which are open
- Report and edit results for tourneys "in progress" to which they signed in
- View the Table of the first round (Place|Name|Games played, won, lost|Rounds won, lost, diff)

The system has the goal to support the host, not to automate everything. And since the first round is the one with the most effort for the host, i thought we could start with this KISS system. BTW: Funny that I saw Ryoko's post not before i was already working on it, so I think she will like it too, although i don't think that the whole thing is that easy as she said ;-).

You can play around in my first public version under:
http://www.flashracer.com/pop-pop/

I will send anklebiter a mail with a password to have host-rights.

I am looking forward to your feedback, although we can only see it's workability in a real tourney. Maybe it makes sense to open a new thread for it.

Until now NO DESIGN, NO HELPFUNCTIONS, NO MANUAL

And here are some screenshots of screens which cannot always been seen by all:

Great work Hyko!
I am proud to be a B. ;-))

As most of You saw I am not a fan of endless argueing too. And as I said I did this tool the last days because I don't wanted to do more important things. I just did it. And if the hosts don't want to use it, then they don't need to use it. The positive thing for me is:
- I installed mySQL on my OS X
- I installed the newest PHP on my OS X
- I learned to use mySQL
- I learned to use PHP
- I learned how to port an mySQL DB from my local machine to the rented server
- and I had fun developing it 🙂
So what do I want more? 🙂

I am still looking forward to reading some feedback and improvement-suggestions, ideas. Maybe one day i will have again other things to do I don't want to do 🙂

P.S. Please see this system beside all this rule discussions and explicitly: this is no attack on You, Anklebiter, and thanks for saying "really cool" 🙂
