Hi!

I once joined the second pop-pop tourney which was organized by Helix (long time ago). Due to the fact that I missed the last tourney I am a little bit surprised about the "new" rules. I think the gamestyle of the old tournaments in which everyone played each other is much better and much more fair than beeing disqualified after the first defeat in a game. Furthermore it is nice to read that demo players are invited to join, but IMHO the risk to fall asleep during a normal-skill match and to lose due to the fact that your head crashed on the keyboard is too high - especially if you disqualified afterwards 🙂

The second point is of course not so important. But I would be interested in some arguements pro and con the "play-each-other tourney-style".

I am looking forward to joining the tourney!

Hyko

Hope that was English 🙂

------------------

I must say i agree with Hyko. I found the first few tournaments more informal style to be more appealing than the heavily regulated and structured tourneys of late, and made the same point in response to the same rules when they were posted for the last tourney. in the risk of sounding repetitive, here is what i said:
"in previous tourneys (I admit i only have played on one) the system of hosting a game that said "tourny game-anyone i haven't played?" or hosting a game with a list of people you haven't played was an efficient and self managing way of doing things, and helped cut down time that might be wasted if one waited for the person they were scheduled to play next was still in another game. "

I didn't play that last tournament, so I don't know how it went, but it seems by the scores that it worked out ok, besides some people not playing eachother. Maybe i will play this time.

oh i also agree about the normal games being harder than the expert ones, due to the 'incredibly boring head crashing against keyboard' factor.

:)™

I agree with Hyko and  - I've not yet played in a tournament, but when I play people online, I cannot stand playing on normal - it is just too dull.

The idea that it is better for unreistered people because it lasts longer is flawed because everything happen s - o s - l - o - w - l - y t - h - a - t a - l - l t - h - e t - i - m - e
g - o - e - s w - a - i - t - i - n - g etc etc

'Hard' probably gives the best compromise between speed and disconnection times IMHO

Also, I think all vs all tournaments are probably better than knock-out tree. Admittedly the tree will be over much quicker, and won't suffer from people failing to play everyone else, but they are also less fun (especially if you're new - you may only get one game) or just have a string of bad luck due to down arrows - no chance for it to improve against other people.

If you're going to do a knock-out, it might be best to play quite extended matches? Say best of three of the normal best of three (e.g. a maximum of 18 games ( 3 lots of 3-2), and minimum of 6 (2 lots of 3-0) ). That's what people seem to play usually online anyway, and gives luck a fair chance at evening out. To make it more interesting - could force a change of pop after each one? 😉

Is this happening at 6pm CET/ET/PT (i.e. US somewhere) or GMT? 6pm in UK might actually mean I can play! Otherwise we're talking midnight or later on a Sunday... no way 😞

Long time I've not been playing Pop-Pop... I might join in the new tourney this week-end if I can make it...
Just as I see there are some discussion about rules etc... my page of the very very first Pop-Pop Tourney is still active and though I did encourage people to take over the organisation of tourneys it was organised only once after the launch. Anyhow the rules & results of the first (and second) Pop-Pop Tourneys are here: (url="http://"http://homepage.mac.com/impp/pop/")http://homepage.mac.com/impp/pop/(/url)

Also wanted to say 4pm CST is not convenient at all for European players 😞 eaquals to 10pm GMT, 11pm CET. I'll probably not join.

I love pop-pop and I love the tournaments.

But I must agree with Hyko:
I hate to play normal, even hard is boring and dull.
On the other hand my system crashes (10.2.4) or @ least pop-pop (1.0.2) does, as soon as I try to play a DEMO-Player.

Not playing them (what is not possible, I am afraid) disqualifies my automatically.
Not fair.
😞

So I think, it would be fair, if there was an "only registred" tourney or - hey: A brand new Idea!
What about a registration number, that only works during the tourney?

Wouldn't that be great?
Anklebiter, what do you say???

Besides that I sometimes have some probs to connect single players.
But I guess I gotta solve that myself.

cya on Sunday,
/LISH

It's 23h centraleuropeantime, isn't it?

You use my rules and don't give me credit! what is this, a friggin mutiny? I say REVOLT, REVOLT!!!!!

Hello. I think it is great that tournament enthusiasm is back and I hope it goes very well for everyone who plays. I would just like to offer a few thoughts on your 'Tournament Rules & Info'.

Quote

Email the results of each match to the tournament referee.

Surely emailing all your match results together when you have played everyone is far easier and less time consuming.

Quote

If you are unregistered, play in normal difficulty.

Maybe this is necessary because of the DEMO time cut-off, but I agree with Hyko, Crono and LISH, Normal is tedious. It's like waiting for a bus. Perhaps saying, "Very sorry but no DEMO players" wouldn't be such a bad idea. It might even encourage registrations! 🙂

Quote

A private game will posted, telling who needs to play who next. Don't try to play it.

Is this practical and necessary! I don't think so, people will know who they have yet to play, they're not stupid! (well most arn't! 🙂 )

Quote

Have fun, relax, and keep chatting to a minimum, (maybe a "gg" but that's it!)

You're not a Police officer by any chance are you!

Quote

How to register for the tournament. Send email to: poppop at foxchange.com

Is this really necessary? It seems a bit far fetched!

The 2 tournaments last year went very well, without some of your above suggestions, they were a lot of fun and there was little or no confusion.

Quote

The next tournament is going to take place: Sunday, February 23rd @ 4pm CST

That means a 10 / 11 o'clock start for UK and Europe respectively. I doubt if many Euro Poppers will be playing, not with Monday morning looming! This would be a shame, there are a lot of very good pop-poppers from these parts don't forget! I would recommend perhaps 1pm CST so people in the UK and Europe can play before it gets too late.

Anyway, good luck, I hope it is a success and lots of people do play, whether you change the times or not.

Lets try to just make this happen, see how it games, and make changes from there. No one has emailed in, so I don't even know if there is going to be a tournament.

Maybe nobody emailed in, cause nobody really expects to be disqualified for spontanious dropping by ...
😉

I guess SHOES is right:
Do not underestimate all the "old" 😉 european pop-poppers (talkin about shoes, lumisa and last but very not least hyko) - they all are aspirants for the title.
To put a time that would mean playing till bout 2AM on Monday - well looks a bit like either not beeing aware of this fact or like not wanting to compete too many - well ...
🙂

I was kidding.

Honestly:
I also think it would be better to start the tourney @ let's say 2cst latest.
And to have @ least two different valuations: with DEMO-Players and without them.
And: let anyone play who likes to drop by, without an official registration, without announcing who is next and stuff.
Just let's have that fun, ok?

Peace! 🙂

Talkin about this DEMO-Player 10.2.4-Crash-Thing again:

I know, this is a pop-pop-forum an no bug-report-site, but:

I got no other crash on my machine up to now.
Only those pop-pop-related ones!
Also after reinstalling X!

Maybe someone should react on my reporting that bug ...

Okay, as the referee I have tried to sort through your suggestions and come up with the best compromises. Accordingly, I have updated the rules at the top of the page.

First of all , I have moved the time back up to 2:30 CST. I think this should accomodate more of the players. This is the earliest I can do it Sunday do to outside reasons.

Secondly , I have reorganized the tourney. The first round will be all vs. all, as you guys have asked. When you e-mail me the results, I will find the four best records, and those players will advance to round 2. Please make sure you're handle is included in the e-mail. Also, put the results of each match into one e-mail. I say this because in the event of a tie record, the winner of the tied players will advance.

For instance, if Player X is 4-2, and player Y is 4-2; but Player X defeated player Y in the round, then player X will advance. If you have any questions, feel free to post them.

Finally , in the second round the 1st record will play the 4th record, and the 2nd record will play the 3rd record. This way, there is an incentive to do really well in the first round.

The winners in this round will advance to the final round which will be the championship round. The winner of course, will be the champion.

-----------------------------------------------------

Alright, I think that will make for a really cool tournament, because everyone gets a chance at everyone, and you still have the excitement of a tournament championship and a real championship if you will. Call it the Pop Bowl if you like. If you have any suggestions there is still time to change stuff up, so post them here.

Also, please send registrations to scarroll@olemiss.edu . Good luck everyone. 🙂

Very good to see time as been set-up earlier... for my European friends, that means:
8.30 pm in the UK/Ireland and Portugal
9.30 pm in the rest of the E.U.

See you there, I'll send my registration in 🙂
