Real world photography for landing pics

i've tried the similar thing. i got to 11 pictures before i gave up.
it might be a better idea to get real pictures for spobs instead...

Introducing additional models is a hard work as you say, but the next version of terragen with allow model import, so you'll be able to place your own model in the generated terrain model and render all together.

In the Atmosphere window, increase the Simple Haze bars. You'll have to play a bit with them until you get the desired effect.
Also, in Lighting Conditions, you may want to check the "Clouds cast shadows" box and other shadows.

Were it a picture, I would say that it is very over-exposed. As a CGI, I don't know how you would fix that except possibly re-positioning the lights/camera or something. Pictures generally don't look good when there is alot of white in the scene. (Or, some would argue, any.)

Yeah, it's computer generated. What should I do to the lights? The sun is currently far to the east, fairly high up. I probably made the sun too large; I'll be fixing that.

Jonathan: actually, it's just that the sun is on the other side, and thusyou're seeing the back of it. I'll try and reposition the camera.

You could try turning down the atmospheric glow if its up at all, make sure the sun is behind the camera, turn down the sunlight strength a lot, as well as sizing the sun down a bit. If you are still getting undesirable reflections in the water, you can play with the reflection properties for sunlight in the Water window. The first few things I mentioned are in the lighting conditions window.

Heh, out of my free time, I was tinkering with images I found on the internet trying to make landing pics for EVO. However, because of copyright infringement, I went to alter the pics using various Photoshop methods. Technically, if an image is changed to at least 40%, then it becomes something completely different. Still, there's always that iffy part so if I made them, I don't plan to release it in public, it's for personal use.

However what I would really like to do, (I think it's been mentioned, not sure). Is to recruit any of you out there who owns a camera and each living in a certain environment, and take pictures of their surroundings.
(i.e someone living in a desert, another living in a tundra region, another living in a beach area. etc.)

Conditions are that images taken must not contain any man-made objects what so ever. The scenes will have to be 100% nature. This also excludes any animals like birds or beavers and of course Homo-Sapiens. Reason for this, is because I want them to have the versatility for Photoshop editing if needed. (i.e. strange alien planets having unearthly colored atmosphere).

Obviously of course, I will credit to all the photographers. I live in Panama and if I had a camera, I would of been able to take maybe a couple or a few variety of scenes. But since I don't own one, this project will absolutely require people from throughout the world to pull this off. (at least those who own a camera and an internet connection.)

This is at least one way I can think of to make a plug-in using real images for landing pics.

Actually, even if you alter the image 100% (for example, by changing the hue of every pixel) you are still infringing copyright because you are incorporating copyright material. Only if you expunged all of the original photograph would you be not infringing copyright - but in that case, why would you want the photograph in the first place?

With regard to your other idea - I don't want to poor cold water on, but this sounds hauntingly close to our old friend the 'if everybody will make graphics for me, then I will give them credit in my plugin' thread. As a rule, if you want people to give you stuff for free, then you have to convince them pretty well that their labours really will appear in something they will be proud of. Right now it all sounds very vague.

I remember the first time I did some work for somebody else for their plugin. They asked for some ships, which I designed and rendered for them. My ships fulfilled the letter of their specification, but they emailed me back saying that wasn't really what they had in mind, but would I make a selection of completely different ships to give them a bit more choice. I did send them some more ships, but they didn't like those either. By this time I had wasted about 40 hours of rendering time (this is back in the days when ships could take up to 24 hours to render). I didn't send him any more ships. His project then evaporated like most other projects do.

The lesson to me was: if people are getting it for nothing, then that is generally how valuable they will reckon it to be. I'm afraid a lot of us on this board have been burned that way, and are a bit more wary.

If you really want to do this project, then I suggest you set up a website with the descriptions of all of your planets, and some kind of ranking system for people who submit entries which get used for the most planets. If you posted the pictures on the site as they arrived, you would generate some sense of community. Just a thought, if you're really serious about this.

Not to sound rash, but it's as if you assume that I'm like 'that' guy, I don't blame you of course. It's not surprising that those people have ended up wasting hours and hours of other people's time to have the project vaporized away. Just to let you know, I have already know how much work and effort it would take to pull off this kind of project. Incase you've forgotten, I was messing around with the various downloaded images, all I have to do is finish editing they way I want them to be so I can display it to the people what exactly I'm looking for. I can even post the originals so they know of the origin of my intentions.

Of course, there could be another way. I can try to search the internet and look for photos to download and edit them, but, I will have to contact the author and explain my idea and that it's a non-profit project. I can go as far as to give them references to the game and other various resources for their understanding. If we agree on an arrangement, I can download the images and modify them legally. In this manner ,I will rely less on asking people to actually take pictures of their surrounding environment as this is meant to be the last resort should I be unable to find what I am looking for on the internet.

Now you see how much there is? That is how serious one has to be.

This is my sig.

Nice.

Suggest you download a couple of Photoshop Actions from (url="http://"http://share.studio.adobe.com/Default.asp")http://share.studio....com/Default.asp(/url) though. Particularly, the Provia Velvia actions and the edge sharpening actions. The reason is that most real world photos look a bit soft and a bit under coloured compared with Bryce generated images. Provia / Velvia will pump up the colour without making it unnatural, and Edge Sharpening (nb, not the same as the Edge Sharpening in Photoshop) will give unparalleled sharpness.

If you only have Photoshop LE, these actions are available elsewhere converted, but I'm not exactly sure where to look.

Anyway, did you get any of the mud bubble pits (I forget the actual name for them, it's been a while since I was there)?
